to 3 pm teenagers receive silver duke of edinburgh awards whitchurchstouffvihe residents courtney kroen and amy kappus received silver awards recently in the duke of edinburghs award young peoples challenge they were among 77 youth from across ontario who received the award from ltgov james k bartleman recently pfince philip created the awards in 1956 to foster selfdiscipline enterprise and perseverance in all young people including young offenders aboriginal youth and young people with special needs the program was introduced to canada in 1963 since then more than 300000 young people between the ages of 14 and 25 have taken part miss kroen began working on her silver award late in 2002 and is aim ing to complete her gold in this year for the silver award participants have to complete 45 hours of com munity service go on an expedition of three days and two nights pursue and improve in a skill over a year and participate in 40 hours of a fit ness regime over 20 weeks miss kroen is in her final year at holy trinity school in richmond hill she assisted with swimming les sons at the stouffville pools for the service component of the award and canoed for three days in the haliburton forest pursuit of both the silver and gold awards led her to go dogsledding our town with hannelore volpe last february and hiking for five days in algonquin park in september she is working on her grade 5 piano and used her interest in track and field to complete the award requirements she hopes to study kinesiology at university and become a pediatric physiotherapist or massage thera pist miss kappus decided to try for the silver award to help her get into the university of her choice to earn the award the 17-year- old has helped with childrens pro grams at the kortright conservation centre worked with the out of the cold program which helps the homeless and has taught drama to girl guides she spent 10 days canoeing and hiking in algonquin provincial park during a monthlong camp pro gram during the 18 months she worked on the award she also stud ied oil painting watercolour and acrylics the grade 12 student hopes to study communications at sir wilfrid laurier
