stouffville suntribune thursday jan 8 2004 7 roaming around with jim thomas double shot of songs on allstouffville cds if you cant beat em join em thats what ive done im now part of the cd crowd making the long overdue switch from cassettes to be honest it wasnt my idea it was kind of well forced upon me i was perfectly happy with the multitude of tapes collected over the years to set them aside like bags of unwant ed garbage seemed like an awful waste but time and tide waits for no one it was obvious the changewould come sooner than later however it was the purchase of our new alero that has tened the move it came equipped with a cd player only a not-so- welcomed toy at the time but much appreciated now adding icing to the cake was a family gift found under the christmas tree a beautiful surroundsound compact compo nent system the like of which id never seen the interior of our modest abode is currently immersed in music both vocal and instrumental i love it as if someone had pre monitions of what was to be jean and i received two mar vellous cds at precisely the same time one called shed some light produced by the stouffville united church choir and ml men sing cre ated by stouffvilles men of note words cant describe the beauty of both each so different yet in many respects so very similar regardless of what were doing we stop and listen so fabulous is the sound while the miracle of such modern mechanisms far surpasses my ability to comprehend its a relief to realize the end result is a combination not of wires buttons and switches but sacrifice talent and commit ment enough to give one goose bumps it was our ministers idea said united church organist and choir director wanda stride she recalled how one sunday morning after worship bob nightingale approached her won dering if the choir might consider so arduous a task in honour of the congregations 150th anniversary wanda not one to avoid a challenge placed the suggestion before the members their response was a unanimous yes she then set out to select several anthems some familiar and some unknown these were submitted to the choir for opinions and suggestions it was all very democratic ms stride recalls fifteen were agreed upon the actual recording managed by stouffvilles larry jackson was finalized last february in the sanctuary it was a great day ms stride said we had so much fun to everyones amazement she said the majority of anthems were completed in one take to add a personal touch to the project rev nightingale and ms stride combined to write the cds first hymn shed some light others wellknown to the congregation and the community include jesus saviour pilot me precious lord take my hand and leaning on the everlasting arms im very pleased wanda says and so am i we play it continuously discs and tapes are available at the church or by calling 9056401163 the men of note cd is a classic containing 17 selections with a total spintime of almost an hour the chorus which has put stouffville on ontarios music map is directed by jeff mcaloon of oak ridges although at the time the cd was recorded doug walker was the director the chorus accompanist is john mole vocal soloist is susan brown in unison they create an evening of musical majesty without equal the chorus manager is david duggan as for the cd the final take was completed at stouffvilles christ church anglican the acoustics are perfect there mr duggan said it seemed like the logical place logical too is the fact three of 17 selections on the disc were performed in 2001 at the vimy ridge war memorial in france a concert forever etched in the minds of chorus mem bers the heavy schedule of public appearances in 2002 and 2003 appears likely to continue in 2004 for those who like myself enjoy performances at the flick of a switch cds are available by calling 9056407872 or 905- 6404206 youll be glad you did jim thomas is a stouffville resident who has written for area newspapers for more
