jeff mitchell staff writer citing their susceptibility topeer pressure a superior court judge has spared two men prison terms for their roles in the conspiracy to murder markhams maria wong instead edgar fredericks and jose duenas were handed conditional sen tences friday morning by justice alfred stong the judge noted the relatively peripheral nature of the two men in the plot to kill mrs wong who was brutally slain in the garage of her raymerville drive home feb 1 1 1999 justice stong also took into account time the two men spent in custody prior to their sentencing as well as the virtual house arrest they have been subject to since being granted bail the judge found both men were bit players in the conspiracy hatched by mrs wongs husband shii kwan johnny wong as a means to collect insurance money and pay off gambling debts he agreed they were pressured into becoming involved by way of their association with other conspirators the crown had argued strenuously against conditional sentences citing the brutalnatureof the killing mrs wong was stabbed to death by christian ortiz her throat slashed and the fact it was a contract murder prosecutor peter westgate wouldnt comment on the likelihood of an appeal friday morning- the sentence of two years less a day to be served in house arrest brought tears to the eyes of mr duenas 23 who justice stbng said was pressured into standing watch the night mr ortiz followed mrs wong into her garage mr duenas got into a vehicle with the killer and conspirator james pierce the night of the slaying with the belief they were going to steal a car the judge said it was only as plans for the murder fell into place that he realized the magnitude of what he was caught up in and when mr ortiz followed mrs wong to her house mr duenas decided to cut and run the judge said i accept the submission that were it not for the peer pressure he would riot have beenin that vehicle the judge said he did not want to participate in the murder of mrs wong mr fredericks the 28yearold father of two young children was even less involved in the plot the judge found mr fredericks under pressure from mr pierce to become involved in the con spiracy provided the name of the even tual killer mr ortiz justice stong said mr fredericks was sentenced to 15 months of house arrest both men plead ed guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit mumer
