recreation blight on the landscape of whitchurch- stouffville still retains the name brucesmill a more appropriate descriptive would be bruces mire yes the environmentally conscious may see beauty in the site but i and others like me are embittered by the transi tion as in all things there are reasons a spokesperson at the toronto and region conservation authoritys head office attribute the decline in part to cutbacks however a sign attached to the pay booth calls it waterfront restoration project that will enable the area to as a natural aquatic ecosystem further the sign says by providing a healthier water body we aim to increase the diversity of aquatic plants and animals improve water quality as well as provide habitat for other species on the surround ing lands r if youre still with me after all this esoteric jargon it would appear the powers-that- 4e have elected to maintain the propertyfdr conservation only with little or no concern for the paying public yes i visited the site recent- wiih jim thomas ly four times in fact just to make sure the initial trip was- nt anoptical illusion walking trails that once thrilled trekkers by the thou- sands are virtually nonexis tent the paths still accessible are undersigned the only inhabitants 1 discovered excluding two mourning doves and a robin were mosquitoes so much for west nile con cerns swimming always a main attraction has been banned unfortunately signs indi- eating this are few and far between weeds are- higher than elephants eyes with weatherworn picnic tables crying for paint the much- touted golf driv ing range is but a glorified hay- field the only pluses i could see were several soccer pitch es paid for by the town and a planned community safety village financed by the region for those unaware the orig inal flour mill on the property was erected in 1829 by german settler casper sherk the first dam preceded it in 1827 wjth a sawmill to follow one year later the bruce brothers william and robert took over the flour operation and renamed the structure carricks mill after their homestead of scotland the present building was built in 1858 power was pro vided by utilizing a fume fed from the dam a steel water- wheel was installed in 1912 arid remains in place today the mill became fully elec tric when the dam and spill way were destroyed in 1954 by hurricane hazel amazingly the mill remained operational until 1962 one of the last of its kind in ontario the property was acquired by the metro toronto and region conservation authority in 1961 and opened as a cqn- servation area in 1965 j was privileged to attend the ribboncutting cere- monies it was a gala event with dignitaries attending from all levels of government this was prior to the intro duction of regional govern ment to york the site was then described as a jewel on the landscape of markham township today that jewel now located in whitchurch- stouffville stands severely tar nished little used by anyone i j i
