because of the power outage and some medical calls when the telephone system went down at the ballantrae station shortly after the blackout began calls were re routed to the stouffville station the brock and lorie boyd- once a state of emergency was declared by the ontario government municipal staff worked closely with the region of yorks emergency manage ment committee and followed direc tives from the province as the blackout continued york regional police chief armand la barge confirmed in an interview tuesday york region was still in a state of emergency more officers are on the job in the event of another blackout weve cancelled everything except days off the chief said the regions communications systems have two backup systems in newmarket and in the southern part of the region all facilities are currently running on generators and are running at about 50 per cent power to reduce energy consumption cooling centre if the blackout had continued a cooling centre would have opened in whitchurchstouffville and food and water would have been distributed to those in need latcham hall had been considered as one possible airconditioned site for public use but there wasnt enough generator capacity friday to open it however fire department staff checked on residents in local seniors homes retirement communities and private homes we relied on neighbours to keep an eye on each other mr beckett said we tested some of our systems and we have to figure out what kind of additional backup we have to do in future chief labarge said newmarket and markham had cooling centres open during the blackout york region has several locations for shelters should large numbers of people need to be evacuated in an emergency although the town offices were closed friday all staff required to run facilities maintain parks roads and other essential services remained on the job no lights meant no swimming at indoor and outdoor pools and no read- tim beckett fire department checked on seniors during power blackout last week ing at the lebovic leisure centre library throughout the weekend the facility was shut down on the weekend because of the unstable power supply by monday all services were up and running when the power went out we tried to shut down most of the big units like air conditioners to avoid damage to equipment said tom graham direc tor of leisure services nick of time at rink the most nervewracking part of the blackout for mr graham was won dering if the newly installed ice at the stouffville arena would end up as an expensive puddle of water fortunately power came on just in the nick of time friday afternoon otherwise the ice would have sepa rated from the concrete beneath and would have had to be scraped out with a bulldozer both ice pads would then be refilled and refrozen a process tak ing at least a week pad b was in operation almost imme diately pad a was scheduled to open yesterday some revenue was lost since ice rentals had to be cancelled for those with extra garbage because of spoiled food from fridges and freezers garbage bins for house hold waste are available at the stouffville works yard at 5827 main st in stouffville the vandorf works yard at 10 hunters rd in vandorf and the ballantrae community centre 5592 aurora rd for public use until late this afternoon otherwise residents can double- bag spoiled food and keep it in the refrigerator before putting it out with their regular garbage this week said paul whitehouse the towns director of public works emergency procedures are being reviewed to meet criteria set by the province in the aftermath of the sept 11 terrorist attacks two years ago we tested some of our systems and we have to figure out what kind of additional backup we have to do in futare mr kristoffy said an important component of future emergency procedures is public edu cation said mr beckett the municipality would most likely work m conjunction with the region of york to inform residents of services available to them during emergencies
