prestigious millenniiim scholarships carlos pazsoldari who recently graduated from brother andre catholic high school in markham is a national winner of the canada millennium schol arship foundation excellence award he receives 5000 for his entrance year at queens university in kingston- where he is studying engineering the award is renewable over the next three years for a possi ble total of 20000 lynda baker is a local winner of the excellence award with a 4000 schol arship for her first year at trinity western university in british columbia the canada millennium scholarship foundation is a private autonomous organization created by parliament in 1998 v it has a 25billion endowment and a 10year mandate to create opportu nities for canadian stu dents to pursue postsec ondary studies and demon strate excellence mr pazsbldaris love for the sciences is evident in rthe dobsonian 10inch f7- refracting telescope that he built last summer and set up in his yard on a wooden altazimuth mount he also constructed wheri a regionwide sci ence fair was no longer organized for high school students cofounded the york region science fair last april with fellow brother andre student mike cournoyea mr pazsoldan won the brother andre alumni award dedicated to lifelong learning the national biology competition 2003 and the chem 13 2002 award from the university of waterloo c mr pazsoldan achieved the highest mark out of all brother andre students and was in the top 5 per cent of all participants in the chemistry competition he received the leonardo da vinci award from the university of toronto for attaining the highest average 9499 per cent out of all the oac stu dents at brother andre and also won the university of toronto book award he started school at st mark catholic school in stbuffville before going on to the pace program for gifted i students at st patricks catholic school in markham r lynda bakers love of god her involvement with her church and her- high academic achievement led to her millennium scholar ship which pays 4000 toward her first year at trinity western she has also received an academic entrance schol arship from the university and the graeme walker scholarship at her high school she achieved a 93- per cent average played soccer and was in the schools band arid choir rm trinity western lynda will study human kinetics and worship stud ies shes been a member of the stouffville pentecostal church for most of her life coordinating the arise services there this meant leading the drama worship and youth tech teams to put on the entirely youthrun service her years at the pentecostal church have inspired me to love god and receive gods love ms baker said it is where i became a christian when i was four she enjoys leading the musical arid youth compo nents of worship services teaching a variety of sports and activities such as line dancing to young sters kept her involved with the churchs vacation bible schools for five sumrhers ms baker came up with the concept of a youth unity night for an inde pendent study unit at uxbridge high her idea was to gather several bands who would travel to various churches to help lead worship in oac i had a passibri for seeing all of the youth in uxbridge come together she said this summer sev eral churches have asked her group to lead worship for their congregations she has a lot of options after v graduation becoming an occupational therapist or a dance teacher and being involved in some kitidiof music ministry ms baker will be follow ing her older sisters jennifer and sandra to the trinity western both sisters travelled across canada with a singing group the canadian continentals sandra is the groups assis tant director this summer i have never moved outside my house before and now i am going to bc ms baker said almost in disbelief she enjoys playing the guitar and composing music and i love to dange the 18yearold said she has a lot of options after graduation becoming an occupational therapist of a dance teacher and being involved in some kind of music ministry strawberry festival remains debtfree bv hannelore volpe staff writer stouffvilles strawberry festival was able to coyer its budget this year with l some funds to spare said festival committee chair person liz fraser numerous organiza tions and individuals pro vided sponsorship for the fiveday event which this year had a budget of around 73000 the festival has rrian- aged to work within finan cial restraints over die past several years about 15 volunteers joined the dozen festival committee members to organize and oversee the strawberjrjr festival it dreyabqut 30000 pebple which was similar to last years attendance the event included many new events such as the lumberjack show the birds of prey demonstra tion the beauty arid the beast show there was also vendors and entertainment after an ecumenical sunday church service iri the park and the tribute show on saturday night anyone who would
