16 economist sunsuntribune diversions saturday july 26 2003 ung driver eyes super series from page is aurora to kickstart their day at sunset speedway after all a couple of gals on their way to the race track is one thing but to race its- as if folks are waiting for the other shoe to fall and their fellas to appear when they hop out of the truck not gonna happen people are so confused when they see us laughs the 23yearold now in her fifth year of racing stock cars i tell people that its ok when were driving through aurora to honk and wave were just a couple of girls doing our thing and when they do arrive at the track the women take a backseat to no one after all the team sits atop the driver standings in the thunder car division at the seasons midpoint and they led the way last year at the same time only to be scuttled by a blown engine lambert yake loves the atmosphere the sights the sounds the smell of the fumes and burnt rubber socializing with other drivers year afteryear he has seen many drivers come and go some even on to the nascar circuit theres only one place to get all that atthetrack im sure there are other things i could do but this is the hobby that i have said mr yake who has resisted the urge to move onto faster more extensive levels it isnt so much the speed as the competitive thing in my mind ive driven faster tracks and end viip thinking on the way home do i want pins in my arms and legs ive always thought that t need 10 fingers two arms and two eyes for work 1 was always pretty sure i was coming home in one piece to go to work the next week the most ive ever had was a bro ken finger in 1975 i understand there is more to life than racing but it is something we enjoy said mr yake noting that saturday nights at sunset almost always brings friends and family to the races it has the sounds the smell and the com petitiveness to know that you put a motor together and can go as fast as the guys who spent thousands of dollars to have someone put a motor together perhaps it is experience that has mel lowed mr yake who is highly regarded for his sportsmanship sure theres nothing wrong with winning but there have to be limitations we dont want to get into a wiri-at- allcpsts situation years ago we found that put he said some people will throw lots of money into it but well do jit the smart way keep costs to a min imum and try to stay competitive each week and with our experience try to show those younger whipper-snap- pers mr yake drives the only car at sunset hot to carry a sponsors name the rea son is simple i never chased the sponsorship because i was never sure i could be at a race he reasoned obviously my job has to come first and if im baling thats where i got to be i dont want to be explaining to someone that has invent ed money in me why i couldnt be at the track it happens occasionally meanwhile ms connollys tbdo list includes landing a ride in the cascar super series next year already plans are under way for a fundraising bash in aurora next may to help offset the antic ipated 15000 cost for a single race in that series to finish even in the top 15 would be great and maybe someonesees me and says hey she belongs in cascar said ms connolly the winner of 61 races in four years right now were leading in the points and just loving it- even to drive in the thunder car series is not for the weak of wallet while reluctant to disclose her own budget fig ures ms connolly suggests its a simple matter of looking at the competition to see who spends how much nevertheless money can be gulped up in a hurry when you sit in the grandstand you can tell who is spending 400wfor a season and who isnt she said when something needs fixed its bur money we get but and fixit we haul up our own stuff and work on the car but weve been fortunate to have some wonderful sponsors for the past three years cijniess you wreck something and weve been lucky maybe well spend one night a week on it but usually its me same stuff the same drill every week we have our checklist getting riirt under her nails and spending her own money to do it forgoing social life on weekends if s a far cry from the glamour of the high- powered series such as cart where drivers hop behind the wheel for the length of time it takes to complete a race then turn the vehicle over to the crews ms connolly calls that executive rac- ingv hi- but shes not reauy complaining people ask are you nuts well i guess we are no virgin in novel from page is a note at the back makes it clear this is a work of fic tion based in part on the work of the jesus seminar the jesus seminar is a group of learned scholars who believe themselves qualified to vote on which passages of the gospels are true and which ones arent using this groups research mr ricci has come up with a compelling j story of a nice man with a little medical knowledge and some interesting ideas admittedly a version of events that is already preva lent in pop
