man they may not even know stouffville resident wayne jackson 53 is in his ninth year of organizing the mayors golf tournament which raises money for local youth programs last year the committee donated 1000 to every school in whitchurch- stouffville for his efforts with this tourna ment the keith acton charity golf tourney and years of coachingyouth sports mr jackson has been chosen as the 2003 wwtchurchstpufiville sports personality of the year hell be presented with the award spoh- soredby the stbuflville suntribune at the strawberry festivals opening ceremonies thursday unsung hero at first taken aback that he won the award he said it makes me very proud to be part of it mr jackson has been described by mayor wayne emmerson who has known him for over 40 years as an unsung hero and the guy that gets the job done after attending school in stouffyille and uxbridge and ryerson university he landed a job at the llbos head office he retired two years ago and has gone back to his ball at the willows now the bushwood golf club so intrigued him when he was 10 years old that he hasnt left the game now he over sees the starters marshals and driv ing range staff at the ballantrae golf and country club his entire family including his wife dale and grown children ryan and cheryl also golf but its a challenge to get them all together at the same time mr jackson noted his personal golf triumph came when he won the 1987 markham stouffville hospital golf tournament before the mayors golf tournament wayne jackson and mr emmerson helped organize tofpnto maple leaf assistant coach keith actons tourney the event held at mill run golf and country club raised thousands of dollars for the childrens wish foundation which grants wishes to terminally ill children years of coaching have led him to become a friend as well as a coach to the many youngsters he found it particularly gratifying when he was assistant coach for his sons stouffville juvenile team which won an ontario championship last year i played the same level when i was 19 and i went to the ontario final arid i didnt win he said it was something special for all of us closer to son friends he has been involved as a coach assistant coach manager and train er whatever they needed mr jackson said the added benefit was a chance to become closer to his son and his friends mr jackson has played in the stbuflville amateur hockey league for 23 years he has spent time on the executive and was president in 1992 and 1993 the players range in age from 20 to over 60 in the league that has grown from six teams in 1980 to 30 summer was for fastball which mr jackson played until he was oyer 30 after that he joined the buttermakers team whose canada day weekend slopitch tournament predates the strawberry festival the team raised money for charity everyyear top citizen enjoys helping others from page 1 the driving force behind this woman the community takes note and so does family sue chewins mrs schell kennedys sister explained that in 1990 their two- yearold nephew jeremy schellwas diag nosed with cancer love motivated sandy to organize whitchurch- stoufrvilles terry fox run under mrs schell kennedys leadership the run has raised 350000 in the past 13 years since sandy took over the local run is one of the most successful terry fox runs in ontario mrs chewins said no one notices more than jeremy schell today the 14year old is free of cancer an active member of the stouffville united church mrs schell kennedy vol unteers for the butihthe cold pro gram which provides shelter to the homeless and her churchs teen mission in 1989 mrs schell kennedy recog nized the good work being done by the jennifer ashleigh foundation when norm clements established the founda tion honouring his two grandchildren tragically lost to spinal muscular atrophy mrs schell kennedy offered to help now a key organizer for the event the founda tion has raised 35 million helping more than 3000 seriously ill children sandy is one of our founding volun teers said jane sleep foundation manger sandy has given so very much over the years shell help with anything she is a terrific person mrs schell kennedy helped raise money for stouffville leukemia sufferer brad stevens and for a young stouffville man who sustained a serious spinal injury in a mountain bike accident today luke anderson 22 is attending a rehabilitation program in toronto when luke had his accident and a trust fund was set up i told his father that one of the most important people to be on the committee was sandy mrs chewins said born and raised in stouffyille mrs schell kennedy and her husband richard have two sons matt 17 and simon 14 being chosen citizen of the year comes as quite a surprise im humbled mrs schell kennedy
