kjrk sutherland may 3 with a federal election due in 2004 many people believe the canadian alliance and progressive conservative parties should merge i am not among them uniting these groups is not in canadas or its citizens best interest i believe the only motivation for a united right is defeating the liberals if such a move ment were successful what comes next if the merged party becomes the government can it stay united i dont think so once the alliance and conservatives achieved power there would be disunity within the government the merged party would have differing views and opinions currently both parties have internal weak nesses as mentioned by mr sutherland the alliance may have to dilute many of its prin ciples and the conservatives fear a takeover with these unresolved matters a merger will create more problems uniting them will not dispose of the issues but will emphasize them neither of the parties is broadly based the alliance is strong in the west and thelbries in the east if there is a merger the west may believe the east is being favoured because of the conservatives and the east will feel the same because of the alliance this will increase the suspicions and dis content of each region heela omarkhail markville secondary school pesticides bad for water supply we are not in favour of pesticides arid agree with- them being banned although pesticides can provide weedfree and pest- free green grass there are many reasons why they are not good pesticides are entering our water system and this water becomes poisonous to people arid wildlife children are affected most because they are small and often crawl on freshly sprayed lawns pesticides are linked to many health problems such as leukemia cancer and convulsions to prevent these things from happening we can stop or reduce the amount of pesti cide being used there are many ways to keep lawns and gardens naturally weed and pest free if slugs are a problem you can set out a plastic container in the ground with beer in it you can make up a product using garlic cayenne pepper and liquid dish detergent to spray on plants infested with pests you could even get down on your hands and knees and pull out the weeds finally you can make sure your garden is a place where lady- bugs earthworms and spiders want to live at first our class thought that people should stop using pesticides because they smell bad now after studying pesticides we realize there are many more important reasons grade 7 students glad park public school stouffville no mother but good mothers day though my mother is no longer alive i had the best mothers day may 1 1 our tem ple sanatan mandir in markham held its annual 5kilpmetre walkathon the morning was rainy so organizers decided to have it in the basement of the temple but i decided to walk outside on the laid- out route and there i went alone it was one of the best experiences of my life admiring rain the sound of birds singing the smell of the earth cool breeze the green lawns of houses the greeri trees and above all the beauty of nature arid a very peaceful morning i received the best news of the day later on when i switched on the tv and found out canada had won world the hockey champi onship as an immigrant of east indian origin i was more excited upon learning the winning goal was scored by anson carter who is the son of an immigrant i am proud of his mother who didnt need money didnt need anything but gold for canada on mothers day this is my message to those politicians and others who always blame immigrants for their own selfish interests sureshpatel markham vandalism hurt school project if was an amazing day at markhams william armstrong school recently as stu dents took part in a naturalization project that transformed the school ground everyone participated from junior kin dergarten to grade 8 theres no doubt the students rocked integral to the success of the project were donations of trees from york region and design work by cathie reid of landscape vision associates unfortunately it didnt take long for van dalism to show its ugly head a few trees were uprooted and a couple broken in half the damage was easily repaired this time as citizens we will need to keep our eyes open and wits about us vandalism is unac ceptable and must be stopped jimpriebe stouffville letters policy the
