5 stouffyille suntribune thursday march 27 2003 7 very happy 80th to former chief seeds nourished by esteem produce plants sustained by respect such was and always will be the admiration i hold for for mer markharh twp police chief harvey cox to me a fledgling journalist of 50 years ago chief cox was the epitome of what a man in so high a profile position should be serious yet sympathetic firm yet affectionate resolute yet considerate determined yet receptive chief cox was all of these and more he was a grassroots general admired by all he worked with and all he worked for on the occasion of his 80th birthday celebrated recently i want to reflect on the life of one who over three decades influenced not only on me but a municipality a county and a region havey cox was born on a farm near hwy 7 west of unionville one seven in the family of oscar and laura cox on this property now occupied by unionville high school the markham theatre and the markham civic centre the family raised champion clydesdale horses winners of many awards at the royal agricultural winter fair and the canadian national exhibition in fact at was harveys greatgrand father who imported one of the first clydesdale stallions to ontario from scotland in 1951 harvey joined the markham twp police department then stationed on the east side of main street in unionville along with constable cox the threeman force included chief clarence wideman and constable bill shearn three years later the department moved to an office site in a new muhici- roaming around with jim thomas pal building on woodbine avenue in buttonville harveys excellence as a police officer was quickly recog nized by chief wideman in 1956 he was promoted to staff sergeant then deputychief and in 1963 chief in january 1971 when the regional force was established markhamtwp had a staff of 31 officers and seven cruisers harvey retired from police work following his appoint- to the position of inspector with the regional depart ment for the next two years harvey drafted traffic bylaws for the snewly created town of markham in 1973 became the munic ipalitys first transit coordinator a position he retained until his retirement in 1983- it was coincidental that harveys policing career should begin the very same year as my career in journalism with the tribune 1951 it was coincidental also that through chief cox i would establish a dose working relationship with the markham force a partnership mat continued more than 20 years dispatchers operating out of the buttonville office would call me for photos all hours of the day and night i helped the police and the police helped me this personal service was slater expanded to include stouffvffle village markham village and whitchurch township i charged 1 a picture
