reaching about 40 that year through the decades mem bership has been as high as 62 with 59 currently on the rolls meanwhile the ladies fame for catering continued to grow that first year the auxiliary organized a horse show in memorial park and- of course catered it the show continued for three summers ms sinclair remembers as the 1950s slowly gave way to the 21st century the auxiliary helped make the the royal canadian legion the social hub of stouffville it helped to raise money for veterans and for needy students who want ed to attend university run blood donor clinics raise funds for markham stouffville hospital contribute to its own legion and probably peel enough pota toes to equal the yearly output of prince edward island legion president john mccracken calls the ladies auxiliary the backbone of the legion to show his appreci ation he and his wife are cooking and serving dinner for the ladies on feb 14 and well do the dishes after wards he said dave mcquaker the zone a2 commander which includes the stouffville legion noted that the auxil iary is a very community- minded group its the biggest service organization in north america there are 10 legions with nine auxiliaries under mr mcquakers command he admits its becoming increas ingly difficult to find young people to join the legion to run its programs we are losing the smaller branches we have lost a lot of them mr mcquaker said but we are optimistic and hopeful that it will carry on the legion emphazises youth and education programs such as its track and field organiza tions and yearly poster poetry and public speaking contests at one time this legion hall was the centre of enter tainment for the village noted marjorie smith and we did nt have the kitchen we have now in the early years when the kitchen was in the legions basement we had a dumb waiter to pull the food up she recalled washing hundreds of pieces of cutlery proved to be charter members fiftyyear members of the stouffville royal created the friendship club stouffvilles first seniors group which ran for 30 years until 1995 it was started by tedious until someone came up with the oldfashioned wash- tub method simply add water and detergent drop in the cut lery and stir vigorously with a big stick strongarmed men were much soughtafter for thenlegion president jim mckellar and ladies auxiliary president mabel burkholder ah of the surviving charter members were on the execu tive of the friendship club at one time or another in 1977 mrs clarkson mrs smith mrs murphy and aurelia smith created the seniors cen tre at the silver jubilee club throughout all this activity blood donor clinics at the legion collected between 139 and 200 units of blood yearly we always strived to reach 200 noted mrs smith but we only made it once the ladies raised funds with a remembrance day bazaar and tea which has been going since 1953 with their famous roast beef luncheons wedding receptions with the saturday night bingos of the past and with funeral luncheons the auxiliary is one of the few groups in town that still does funeral luncheons it continues to invite veter ans to stouffville from sunny- brook hospital twice a year for dinner and entertainment and has donated funds for sunny- brooks lounge and garden the auxiliary remembers its ill or shutin members and those older than 80 with its christmas cheer program for the past four years it has run a snowflakes and holly craft show originally started by barb hie and dianne peak every year we say this is our last year said marjorie smith but we keep on going and
