economist suntribune social issues thursday oct 17 2002 church donations made big difference from page 1 were to have food bins and advertising prominendy displayed however retailer participation was hit and miss leading to confusion for many shoppers ms rodgers said under the old sys tem officials counted on grocery bags distributed in newspapers to alert donors that the food drive had started she said many add nonperishable donations to their shopping list as soon as they receive the bag we certainly didnt get off to a great start ms rodgers said people have to be in that frame of mind when they go to the grocery store a lot make a shopping list before they go the brown bag gets them thinking to do that the food network only discovered which grocery stores were participating when it sent volunteers to collect donations some stores didnt par ticipate there probably was a cost to them as well in putting up advertising ms rodgers said some stores chose not to partici pate but we found out way too late when we sent volunteers to pick up the food and it wasnt there things here werent as desperate as they were in toronto where for the first time in 17 years volunteers who sort food donations were told not to bother showing up thanksgiving monday because there wasnt anything for them to do fortunately in york region church es dropped off substantial donations at the beginning of the weekend we definitely have to rethink things the food banks will scream bloody murder if they keep doing it this way a couple of churches made huge donations friday night and saturday morning ms rodgers said if we had relied on grocery store donations we would have had to can cel the sorting shifts ms rodgers who believes the new system can work if implemented prop erly said organizers will have to re think their strategy before the easter food drive next spring i still think its a good idea when the bugs get ironed out she said adding reintroducing the brown bags in addi tion to the new collection system is an option we definitely have to rethink things the food banks will scream bloody murder if they keep doing it this way donors can still drop food off at grocery stores or fire halls they can also make cash donations by sending a cheque to their local food bank or to the network donors who send cheques to the network can designate the money go to the food bank of their choice they will receive tax receipts for their contributions the address is york region food network 194 eagle st newmarket ont l3y 1j6 the website is wwwyrfnca and phone number is 1-
