replant post bylaw signs around exhibition creek re residents still concerned about exhibition creek sept 12 when the town of markham removed more than 1000 trees and shrubs from the slopes of exhibition creek in markham vil lage in order to create a larger channel for flood waters i was shocked that reseeding and replanting were not completed i propose two steps that can be followed to help correct the damage to exhibition creek replant immediately autumn plantings of grasses shrubs and young trees would ensure soil would not erode any more than it already has if replanting is not done now nothing else can be planted throughout the winter season and erosion would continue during the freezing and thawing of the winter months consequently the situation at exhibition creek would be worse in the spring because of rainfall and melting by leaving the western side of the gully bare the town of markham left it open for erosion to carry away the landscape trees and shrubs would have stopped the silt from being carried into the rouge river tributary post signs stating specific bylaws con cerning littering and vandalism stiff fines must be enforced for throwing garbage on town property in addition residents of the area should watch for and report those who vandalize public or private property i believe if these steps are followed the damage to the envi ronment can be reduced dan henderson grade 10 student markville secondary school overwhelming support shows nurses impact on community i would like to thank the many patients friends and neighbours who sponsored me for last sundays canadian breast cancer foundation run for the cure when we acknowledge unsung heroes in our community we too often omit nurses who give so much of themselves one nurse in particular who has had a major impact on my patients is gill burley when gill began chemotherapy for breast cancer five months ago many patients expressed their support however when i recently posted a sign in the office stating that i was running in her honour the response was overwhelming instead of raising 100 or 200 as i had anticipated we had donations exceeding 1500 lmwlebcfil the queen this is recognition of gills tremendous empathy as a nurse and the special relation ship she has with our community id also like to thank laidlaw transit and anna searles who organized the three free buses from markham to the run in toronto this was another wonderful sign of an excellent and supportive community in action dr james carson unionville thanks to all for making moraine walk a big success the board of directors of the oak ridges moraine land trust wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the many individuals and organizations that contributed to the success of our walk for the moraine the event raised over 20000 which will go towards our land conservation activities on the oak ridges moraine this year we had generous sponsorship support from aurora home hardware kodak image check in aurora and richmond hill lipani landscape contractors the economist suntribune and the oak ridges trail association which was also a loyal partner with many of its members play ing a major role in this effort seneca college once again donated the venue where celebrity hikers former toronto mayors barbara hall and david crombieandtvhostmagruffman joined hundreds of participants tom atkins oak ridges moraine iand trust markhams new sign bylaw ignored by many businesses at the northeast corner of woodbine avenue and denison street there is a mobile sign on vacant land this sign has no town sticker saying it has been granted a markham permit for those on markham council who are not familiar with die new sign bylaw this is contrary to section 111f this sign is also in violation of section 112 c ii and i suggest the mayor and council make themselves familiar with this section as of late last week the illegal mobile sign is still at the soudiwest corner of commerce west and hwy 7 this is more than two weeks since i pointed it out to town officials i will have more examples in the next few weeks of illegal mobile signs in markham all contrary to section 11 of die bylaw and just for the edification of council woodbine avenue from steeles north is a travesty of nonbiodegradable plastic in- ground signs meanwhile the garage sale signs stuck on poles and never removed make markham look like a town in decay just like toronto a good example is the median poles at leslie street and green lane inthornhill these are just minuscule examples of why the taxpayer was taken to the cleaners when the town paid a 50000 consultants fee for a sign bylaw that has markham looking worse than ever peter k macleod thornhill council member spent more than an hour at harvest festival re no representation from markham at harvest festival letter to the editor oct 3 the writer was disturbed that no markham councillor attended the harvest festival in pickering on sept 22 although not asked to speak i was there for more than an hour i had to leave before 3 pm to attend markhams volunteer awards and was late because of spending too much time with the agricultural community at the pickering event councillor jack heath ward 5 town of markham liberals should set example on bullying by standing up to bush open letter to oak ridges mp bryon wilfert thank you for your recent newsletter on family week i noted the considerable space devoted to resources on bullying it is a prob lem of great importance to our future society and the values attitudes and behaviours our children absorb i should think the best possible remedy to diis situation and all problems is to provide strong and honest role models for our chil dren to follow i believe the government of canada and die liberal party are largely fail ing at this by their tacit and sometimes active support of the bullying behaviour of die president of die united states on the world stage it strikes me as impossibly counterpro ductive if not downright hypocritical to lec ture children on the evils of bullying in die schoolyard when they can plainly see elected officials lining up in die name of canadians to if not bash someone else then stand around to witness the deplorable and embar rassing exercise what positive role can canada take here would you agree canada would be truer to its international role and mission to stand aside and refuse to endorse this display will you carry this message to your next caucus meeting i would be very interested in hearing your views robert massoud
