little baby in my already busy workconsumed life she had been working six days a week in a consulting busi ness along with her husband vince and wanted to find out how to work on a more flexible schedule she pored through magazines and newspapers and looked up internet sites she was disappointed with what she found either the advice wasnt practical or it was in the vein of you can be more efficient by cleaning the toilet while your child is taking his bath she decided to take action before her son was born after talking to about 100 women in similar situations she wrote her own book flex appeal an inspi rational guide to flexible work for mothers which was released last spring it is available from most of the major book sellers about four years ago she started gathering advice for the book from women who had made the transition and come up with a creative work arrange ment mrs foley found that most women faced the same struggles and challenges and had to make the same tradeoffs shell be sharing her insights in a talk on tuesday sept 17 at the whitchurchstouffville public library starting at 730 pm jacqueline foley stouffville author and mother of zachary and ethan was frustrated with the lack of information for working moms as well as relating ways that other mothers have combined work and children she also gives nittygritty direction to help peo ple find out which types of work are suitable for them in the book women are asked to assess how their child is now being cared for there are only so many hours in a day you have to make tradeoffs prioritize other questions include do you work at home in the office or both could you work inde pendently from home and could you turn your skills into a viable small business a major hurdle many women face is taking one foot off the career track women have to decide whether they can afford cuts in pay due to shorter work weeks and whether they want to slow down their career for their families although the workplace has become more conducive to flexi ble work arrangements in recent years some women still have had to lobby long and hard to con vince bosses that shared or part- time jobs do work mrs foley found in her interviews flex appeal includes a chapter on how to prepare written proposals to present to your boss working from home has also gained legit imacy women have a lot more options mrs foley said she found it empowering to talk to so many women and learn about their experiences in combining work and family life the bottom line is that there are only so many hours in a day you have to make tradeoffs priori tize mrs foley said after four years in stouffville jacqueline foley has two chil dren zachary and six-month- old ethan and is continuing to work three days a week at her consulting business admission is free to her talk on tuesday in stouffville but preregistration at the library 905642read is required for more information on flex appeal go online at wwwget- flexappealcom
