just been killed in a bomb blast they died together soon after the deaths the little boy watched the nazis flatten the family home his father had built the house before he was born however the family wasnt living there when it was flattened the nazis had seized it it was a perfect place to store munitions for their war effort when help came to holland a canadian soldier reached down and gave the little boy a candy it was the first time i ever had chocolate ill remember that chocolate and that canadians for always said mr kruter the canadian soldiers were noted for their willingness to share food the dutch people had very little to eat when we arrived said mr collins we shared what we had and we gave them soap and cigarettes mr kruter immigrated to canada in 1965 today he lives in canned meat we were out in the country there was about 700 of us i dont like to talk about it it was tough going especially near the end i made it home and i never went near a war again about 10 years later mr scott took a job in the gravel business and moved to stouffville he is now retired in 1985 mr scott joined thousands of canadian veterans at the 40th anniversary of the liberation of holland
