economist suntribune opinion thursday may 16 2002 byelection results sending chretien a clear message our cold unspringlike weather fits jean chretiens needs the prime minister of canada should get up early tomorrow morning pull on his woollies and take a trudeauesqe walk in the snow the results of mondays seven federal byelections suggest the prime minister has worn out his welcome perhaps not with the liberal party of canada but with the people of canada joe clarks progressive conservatives stunned everyone by capturing a longtime liberal seat in newfoundland the riding has been a grit stronghold since the rock joined con federation in 1949 thats 53 long years the new democratic party ndp swept the windsor seat held by liberal herb gray for 39 years mr gray was both a well respected and a very skilled politician when his constituents elected the ndp it wasnt an antigray vote rather it was an enough is enough mes sage directed at mr chretien as was expect ed newlyselect ed canadian alliance leader stephen harper won easily in calgary mr harper becomes the eighth party leader to sit across the commons from chretien since the grits came to power in 1993 when a federal or provin cial party leader runs canadians are usually gra cious they do the right thing giving the new leader a place to sit stephen can now join joe and jean to complete the three wisemen pack pierre marc and gerard were on the same liberal team during the early 1970s its too soon to suggest how this trio will compare the liberals did manage to win in the other four by- elections the grits arent surprised at the losses they know the people of canada were a wee bit annoyed when auditor general sheila fraser stated that the government kinda sorta failed to protect the the liberals jumped on a selfdestructive course and they wont get off joan ransberry public interest in giving its pals 16 million in returns for apparently worthless reports the best the government can hope for is people wont be able to figure out what this mrs fraser is going on about lets look at the overall picture after three majority election victories jean chretien remains the undis puted master of the north ern universe up until about a year ago the reason he was in the dri vers seat was simple jean chretien was the best jean chretien was far better than the rest things have a tendency to change things did change as a liberal it saddens me to admit that it is the lack of a credible opposition that keeps jean chretien and the liberals in power a year ago there was no clear alternative in the political arena the pcs were asleep at the switch the tories werent rebuilding anywhere near fast enough the canadian alliance was busy eating its young for reasons unknown the ndp left planet earth while the other federal political parties were mak ing jackasses of themselves the liberals werent far behind human nature being what it is the powerhungry grits put a great deal of ener gy into becoming authors of their own misfortunes the liberals jumped on a selfdestructive course and they wont get off the situation is such that it is time for the prime min ister to admit hes held too much power for too long jean chretien needs to take the trek in the snow and call it a day arrive alive please dont drink and drive thmosbithghttofxiacomnwnityjiiceotheeconmtsimnriuiw our marinated flank stems
