reach that stage we better pay attention to the needs of that growing population at the same time lets not overreact by focus ing solely on longterm care beds lets keep people well and in their own homes in a report to the regions health committee last week mr turner pointed out peo ple aged 75 or older are the group most likely to suffer from chronic and agerelated illnesses are the heaviest users of health services and are most likely jo require institutionalized longterm care in the short term york is getting 1480 new longterm carebeds which must be operational by december 2004 and an additional 3089 spaces in communitybased programs including sup portive housing day pro grams for alzheimers patients and the frail elderly and outreach programs at the moment york has 1885 longterm care beds not including facilities in the region whose beds have been allocated to toronto seniors the new beds arid com munity spaces are part of a project by the tories to create 20000 longterm care beds and 41600 placements in communitybased seniors programs but mr turner warns that beginning in 2005 york will experience a critical shortage of longterm care beds if the province fails to provide more by 2006 the region will be short 700 beds and that will grow to almost 2200 in 2011 3700 in 2016 and to almost 5700 in 2021 the region had applied to the ministry of health and longterm care for 320 new beds however the province rejected 120 beds in the northern part of the region because it fell outside the ministrys preferred service area the application for 200 beds in the southern part of york was also rejected due to a legal technicality regarding the purchase agreement sub mitted with the proposal the communities that will experience the largest increases in elderly residents by 2021
