economist suntribune health thursday jan 24 2002 by lisa queen staff writer some york region med ical experts are keeping an eye on worrisome indicators suggesting the rate of antibi otic resistance has jumped sharply in canada dr ian zatzman chief of family practice at york central hospital dr chris gannage who runs a family practice in newmarket and works at the emergency department at southlake regional health centre and grace volkening southlakes co ordinator of infec tion control are monitoring pre liminary data from the cana dian bacteria surveillance network the information shows penicillinresistant strepto coccus pneumoniae a bac teria that can cause pneumo- nia and respiratory ear and blood infections hit 21 per cent last year that surpasses the rate in 1998 of 15 per cent the year the trend peaked the fate began dropping in 1999 fol lowing a national education campaign explaining the dangers of prescribing physicians used to give them out like they were candy antibiotics when they arent needed physicians used to give them out like they were candy said ms volkening adding doctors were under tremendous pressure from patients to prescribe antibi otics when we give them out unnecessarily the next time we need to use them weve created drug resistance dr donald low head of microbiology at torontos mount sinai hospital is wor- ried about the sudden hike he warned the jump could ulti mately result in more illnesses and even death- as- antibiotics become less able to fight off drug- resistant superbugs while the network doesnt offer an explanation for the steep increase in the rate last year dr zatzman dr gannage and ms volkening are wondering whether some doctors and patients are slipping back into old habits of using unnecessary antibiotics with more office because i would nt prescribe antibiotics and theyll go to some walkin clin ic where the doctor will give them some just to get rid of them said dr zatzman i like to call it walkin clinics mcdonalds medi cine its fast its easy but you dont want mcdonalds for your three meals a day while family physicians may have prescribed antibi otics unnecessarily years bgo as a way of keeping patients dr zatzman said the- doctor shortage means there is no longer a need for that kind of competition but because thousands of ontario residents cant find a family doctor they are forced to use walkin clinics for regular medical care meanwhile ms volkening and dr gannage are ques tioning where the increase in the resistance rate is coming from is it a blanket problem across the country or are some trouble spots account ing for the hike neither has seen evidence of an increase in the resist ance rate in york although they want to monitor the sit uation tb make sure its not the beginning of a trend ifs scary its a big jump where is it happening ms volkening said for me what it says is whats happening and where is it happening im not read- ing about it and saying yeah were starting to see that here but when i read this it was frightening where is it happening is it happening in the city because their patients even tually become our patients dr gannage said the jump in the rate is definitely something to keep track of but it doesnt mean theres reason to panic it certainly doesnt create any anxiety it may be a sta tistical blip but its like any thing we do we have to be aware of
