and the popcorn lady of the strawberry festival with the death of sheila mcleod after a seeminglysuc cessful fight with cancer mcleod died from the disease on wednesday visitation will take place at the oneill funeral home in stouffville on monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm the funeral service will be on tuesday at 1 pm at the funeral home a reception will follow from 2 to 4 pm at the latcham gallery in the old library building on main street born in stirling scotland sheila came to canada at the age of 18 she and her husband ron were married in scotland where they had met they settled in stouffville in 1965 and raised three sons don scott and gavin and one daughter sandy here all three sons moved to alberta sandy lives near port perry she had so much imagination said her nephew stouffville tribune sports writer bruce stapley during her 2 1 years of work at the whitchurch- stouffville public library mcleod delighted thou sands of children and their parents with her march break extravagan zas some of which fea tured moving characters up to 10 feet tall which she built to reenact fairy tales and other stories she had so much imagination she loved the chil dren said library cao marilyn ferguson she was a great employee ferguson said i really enjoyed working with her mcleod retired from the library in october 1997 former childrens librarian barb smith recalled mcleods mag nificent flower garden she was the creative person smith said recallingthe many proj ects they worked on together during their years at the library we stretched the word library quite a bit smith recalled the huge boxes of pinkpop- corn that library staff packed into small bags- for mcleods various popcorn tossing contrap tions which she pedalled down main street during strawberry festival time more recently mcleod was a member of the festival committee before starting at the library in april of 1976 mcleod was a parttime reporter for the stouffville tribune who covered town council stapley remembers his aunt as a person who was very independent he recalls her tackling heavier household jobs after her husband died about 10 years ago she was a crosscountry ski ing enthusiast and cyclist she was the kind of per- son you thought would live to be 100 said stapley sheila was a fixture at robbie bums day events in stouffville complete with tartan and knife in hand
