x ecommistsurirfribuq 23 tj j fall has established itself in this neck of the woods and winter is just around the cor- ner for the majority of -boat- ing enthusiasts that signifies the conclusion to another season of fun on the water v if you own a boat and motor the odds are likelythat youve put your recreational vehicle away in storage until the arrival of warm weather next spring in doing so you might be under the impression that theres rio need to touch your outboard motor until next spiring thafs not a good idea maintaining your out- board motor during the off season will improve the odds ihat it will fire on all cylinders when you turn the ignition or yank on the pull cord for the first time next spring it is during this time when your motor if stored outside during the winter months- is susceptible to moisture buildup on the cylinders it is during this time when your motorif stored outside- during the winter months is susceptible to moisture build up on the cylinders or the engine block can freeze the easiest route in win terizing your motor is to take it to an authorized maiine mechanic and let thqm han- die the work however if- you have mike hayakawa some spare time on your hands there are some simple things can be done just as easily by yourself and at the same time it could save you some hardearned cash for starters theres no need to dispose of any unused gasoline that remains in your tank during the off season adding the recommended doseage of fuel stabilizer which can be purchased at any outboard marine dealer to your gasoline will prevent it from going bad if it remains unused until next spring if you havent done so dur ing your last outing of the season any- old gas that remains in the motor should be run out for those owning a small outboard motor this can be done at home by placing it in a waterfilled barrel with the fuel stabilizer added to your tank of gas attach the gas line to the motor and allow it to run for about five to 10 min utes this will allow the fuel sta bilizer to run through the motorsystem which in turn will protect the fuel engine system from gumming up and prevent water that could get into the fuel system over the winter with a big outboard motor apply a motor flusher or ear muffs which most peo- pie call it because of the items appearance to the water intake with running water into the motor flusher start the engine with the fuel stabilizer added to your tank and run it at idle for around five to 10 minutes after that timeframe dis- connect the fuel line and let the motor run itself out another item that should be maintained is your spark plugs each plug should be replaced with a new one and storage oil should then be applied into the vacated cylinders crank the engine a couple of times to distribute oil into the cylinders trie lower unitoil should also be drained and replaced if the- oil has a- milky appearance chances are water has found its way inside in these instances its best to take your outboard motor to an authorized dealer and let it handle the situation as something could be leaking i iritstbfing your motor do 3- so in a vertical position to allow any water to drain from the systemin the case with small outboard motors store it indoors on astarid taking care of your out board motor during the off season will definitely get your boating season next- year off to a good
