govern ments to officially exonerate lount and matthews- from the charge of treason frank said the two men had been officially pardoned in 1849 by queen victoria 11 years after their execution the governorgeneral of the day made the decision to execute lount arid matthews as an example for others who might be tempted to follow in their paths he said our argument is that they werent traitors because they were fighting for the people of canada we dont think lount did anything to be pardoned for said frank who has authored two books on the 1837 rebellion we would like to see an appro- priate statement issued honouring their contribution to our democrat ic heritage frank also wantsa plaque recog nizing both men placed on the site in toronto where they were hanged an epitaph to the loiint and matthews tragedy appeared in the brockvule recorder july 4 1934 it is now almost unanimously admit ted that the execution of lount and matthews at the hands of the executive ruling upper canada at thatperiod was a tragic error the full force of which stands more clearly revealed as time passes they gave their lives for a prin- ciple which is now firmly embed ded in the constitution of this coun- try and which was recognized at the v close of the rebellion also attending and organizing the reunion was brian hollingshead of burnaby bc who said- the hollingsheads have- always
