regulations summary and you might notice the laws pertaining to fishing for muskellunge are complex theres close to 10 or 1 1 differ ent regulation size limits now in place for those who enjoy the challenge of pursuing a fish with a mythical reputation the ministry of natural resources acknowledges the current regulations are mind- boggling to the average piscator in an attempt to simplify mat ters the ministry announced it will introduce new minimum size limits for muskellunge start ing as early as 2001 what were trying to do is to streamline the regulations for anglers said steven kerr a min istry spokesman from the peterborough office the new minimum size limits will be classified under one of five categories based on the growth potential and maturity of muskellunge populations in individual water bodies these categories include 1 high density populations bodies of water with an abun dance of muskellunge that gen erally do not grow large in these lakes a minimum size limit mike hayakawa would be 36 inches or 40 inches with the growth potential for individual waters determining which size limit is in effect kerr says lakes of this nature would include the kawartha lakes we have healthy popula tions of fish in these lakes and theres a chance of catching a muskie or two in an outing but the chances of catching large fish are small he said 2 enhanced fisheries for waters in which muskellunge may reach sizes larger than aver age minimum size limits in these waters would range from 44 to 48 inches 3 record class fisheries for waters that may produce a worldclass fish a minimum size limit would be set at 54 inches kerr said anywhere from eight to 10 bodies of water come under this category including the ottawa and st lawrence rivers georgian bay eagle lake and lake of the woods 4 fisheries being rehabilitated for waters in which muskellunge have declined and where restoration efforts are under way these bod ies of water would have catch and release rules in effect only kerr hinted lake simcoe and lake couchiching could fall under this category as theres dis cussions under way to try and bring back these fish 5 introductions for new waters where efforts are under way to establish a muskellunge population in creating these categories kerr said extensive studies were conducted over a oneyear peri od by a committee of research scientists ministry fisheries managers and representatives of the ontario federation of anglers and hunters muskies canada incorporated and the northern ontario tourist outfitters association ontario has excellent muskie
