skeptical about mould detector by gianni colavecchia staff writer school board officials have all but given the thumbs down to an invention local businessmen claim could rid area classrooms of a multimillion dollar mould menace york region andyork catholic school boards are expressing skepticism about a device known as the aria a new air sterilization unit developed by two markham entrepreneurs jim spencer and gary forsythe of ase 2000 claim certified laboratory tests show the device destroys 99 per cent of viruses bacteria arid mould spores in an averagesized room while board officials say they are open to new technologies that may rev olutionize the way they deal with mould they wont trust a device until theyre sat isfied thorough independent tests prove the claims were certainly willing to look at any thing that proves to be effective against mould contamination public board superintendent of plant services dave snelgrove said but im skeptical of anything until i can see documented evidence while the aria attacks mould in the air snelgrove said he isnt convinced it addresses the root of the problem spores attached to building materials in the walls of portables where cold and damp conditions breed mould im still not convinced in my own vrittiumsvcontessori school open house saturday february 1 9 2000 1 pm to 4 pm preschool grade 8 high emphasis on system on the inside of a classroom is acceptable to the public he said snelgrove said the board will look at a device seriously when businessmen pay for tests that satisfy concerns of a range of people including health officials and industrial hygienists catholic board chairperson elizabeth crowe echoed the same sentiments she said officials will consider using the devices when there is compelling and independent evidence to prove they are efficient and costeffective i dont think we can close our minds when looking at new things she said but i dont think it a device would be an acceptable solution for parents this device is not a solution that meets our needs were not talking about airborne mould were talking about mould on the inside of walls the catholic board has already reviewed literature on air purifiers and declined to use them in classrooms for now they intend to stick with what theyre satisfied is the tried and tested method of renovating or replacing portables the board has spent about 45 mil lion over the last two years renovating about 300 portables with mould or mouldlike conditions it has spent approximately 8 million within the last six months renovating relocatable buildings called eldales spokesperson chris cable acknowl edged the techniques are costly but said the board has been a leader in killing mould and laying out an effective longr term plan of attack the root of the problem this device is not a solution that meets our needs she said were not talking about airborne mould were talking about mould on the inside of walls the board has researched mould- resistant products and stopped using paper drywall a move that has effec tively eliminated the food source for mould growth within walls she added oryst zyhar director of york regions health protection division has worked with school officials on the issue he said the department agrees with the current plan of attack sanitizing buildings surfaces and trying to prevent water from leaking into the inside of walls its nice to have this equipment but weve got to get rid of the source he said v kin chan the town of richmond hills mechanical engineer acknowl edged its important to take mould from the air but also expressed skepticism the device is fully effective in killing all mould spores in a room you have to eliminate the chance of mould forming in the first place he said with files from pat casey
