rise in york region but a special unit similar to one cre ated by toronto police to battle the problem isnt needed here york regional police deputy chief terry kelly says s we havent identified a need for a special taskforce here kelly said yester day i think the serious situations that we have had have been dealt with effec tively kelly pointed to two highprofile swarming cases the beating of newmarkets jonathan wamback and the kidnapping and beating of a richmond hill student that resulted in quick arrests we made arrests fairly quickly in both those cases he said we know its on the increase and were dealing with it on a local level in contrast toronto police have cre ated a citywide unit in the wake of the swarmingrelated beating death of 15- yearold drnirri baranovski last week toronto homicide detectives have yet to make an arrest in the case despite a record number of crime stoppers tips torontos deputy chief mike boyd called for a centralized unit friday mov ing away from smaller youth crime squads in each station if s always been a concern that something could get out of hand the wamback case really opened everyones eyes sgt mike hand but york region swarmings the something could get out of hand core sgt mike hand said v the wamback case really opened everyones eyes amback attended the same high school as the three youths are charged with his attempted murder another disturbing case was also linked to a high school three 17yearold students were charged with beating a fellow 16-year- old student last week after he was snatched from a parking lot at bayview secondary school the teenager suf fered a broken nose and other minor injuries most swarmingstyle robberies go unnoticed by the public because the vic tims arent injured a typical case took place in aurora last friday when a 15- yearold boy was knocked down bytwo other teenagers and robbed of his wallet and bank card in many cases the attackers and vic tims know one another but often vic tims are afraid to report the incident suggesting police may hot be aware of the full extent of the problem police didnt leam about an oct 10 thorrihill robbery until last weekend because the victims feared their attack ers in that case two 14yearold boys were robbed of cash and jewelry when they were swarmed by four suspects the victims told police one of the robbers had a handgun tucked in his waistband const stuart berts a street beat offi cer in newmarket said police hope to curtail youth crime before it happens by mixing with high school students in a lot of cases kids will tell us things by being in the schools we once got wind of a richmond hill gang of girls comingup to fight some aurora girls berts said it didnt end up happening but york regional police dont have enough staff to place an officer in every school every day berts said he and his partner must police about six high schools in the north half of the region together some simcoe county high schools including
