c economist sun stouffville tribune thursday oct 28 1999 19 community notes bowling tourney supports charities this saturday hundreds of people will gather at the club 300 bowling alley in markham to raise funds for numerous area charities the sixth annual bowling tourney and gala dinner is orga nized by the canada chinese computer association ccca the dinner takes place in the evening at the century palace chinese restaurant on steeles avenue since launching the event in 1993 the ccca has donated more than 212000 to various community charitable organi zations the main beneficiaries of this years proceeds are the alzheimer socieiy of york region the mon sheong foundation and the yee hong centre for geriatric care the bowling tournament typically draws about 200 partic ipants from corporations across york region the fun contin ues with the dinner saturday evening for more than 500 the ccca is an organization of nearly 100 members and associate members with interests in various aspects of the computer industry for more information contact the ccca at 5130675 markham set for santa parade as we wind down towards the end of this century and mil lennium the markham kinsmen are running full speed ahead in preparation of the 27th annual kinsmen club of markham santa claus parade this years parade takes place on saturday nov 27 the theme of this years parade is christmas in the millennium as in other years the kinsmen invite the community to join in to help make this years event the best of the millenni um anyone that would like to put a commercial or noncom mercial float into this years parade is asked to call rod beaton at 905 2940722 for more information on the markham kinsmen club call wes wilson at 905 2964988 stouffville student concert slated the student music scholarship concert will take place on friday nov 5 at 715 pm at stouffville district secondary school st james presbyterian church is the sponsor of this event while the purpose of this annual concert is to raise funds in support of the music program for each of the participating area schools it also provides a forum for musical students to display their expertise as well as performances by school bands and choirs there will be individual students providing performances vocally instrumentally and through dance erinn mccaulay a grade 10 student at sdss will provide preconcert piano music veterans celebrate 50 years if youre interested in memorabilia from second world war or talking to veterans who went through it mark down sunday nov 21 on your calendar thats the day the markham district veterans association will host an open house at the mdva hall at 7 washington street in celebration of its 50th anniversary our charter was signed on that day in 1949 and weve been an active social fund raising and support group for the com munity ever since explained mdva president neil johnston so wed like to open our doors to the people of markham and reacquaint them with who we are the mdva doors will open to the public at 1 pm in addi tion to captured german artifacts uniforms of the day a model of a north atlantic convey patrol vessel and other items on display second world war and korean war veterans of the mdva will be on hand to give a personal perspective at 4 pm there will be a buffet the barbershop harmonies of the suburbanaires singing group will entertain though out the afternoon admission is free alimited number of 20 tickets is also available for a buffet dinnerdance the night before nov 20 at 8 pm the event kicks off the mdvas 50th anniversary weekend membership in the markham district veterans association is not restricted to former military personnel it is open to any interested adults in the aims of the mdva facilities at the mdva include a lounge pool table and darts as well as a meeting room and an assembly hall with a kitchen available for rent at a modest cost the mdva also sponsors an active social program sup ports local charities and provides bursaries to deserving stu dents on saturday nov 6 the mdva will hold a parade and remembrance day ceremonies in markham the event includes a parade and a service at the markham cenotaph hwy 7 and hwy 48 hyland hospital cheque the nelson arthur hyland foundation donated 95000 to the markham stouffville hospital foundation on friday oct 8 left dr jerry halik ear nose throat specialist gina rosen president of the markham stouffville hospital foundation gerald hayden chairman of the board of the nelson arthur hyland foundation and dr john dicostanzo chief of surgery posed in one of the hospital operating rooms regional shows inc presents markville shopping centre for fall 99 october 27th31st for information on future events contact regional shows inc 9056422422
