referendum there are other issues that should also be decided by such a process maybe the time has come to go a step fur ther and let the people decide if they would agree to the removal of some of the many unnecessary stop signs on our roads that add so much to air pollution and frustrate so many motorists isnt it high time and long overdue that we replaced a high percentage of the stop signs with more traffic and pollutionfriendly yield signs years ago we were promised that our traffic flow would be greatly improved as soon as the new traffic computers were in place i understand the traffic computers are now in place but somehow the engineering department must have been able to wrongful ly cross some of the wires since in my opinion it is now worse than ever to drive on york regions roads however the politicians dont seem to have a problem erecting more and more new stop signs adding to the annoyance of drivers and increasing polution better traffic flow and less stop signs would save millions of litres of gasoline cut down on noxious air pollution and save millions of dol lars in healthrelated costs it would also make for happier and less frustrated motorists does not help animals my dad was talking to one of our neigh bours who lives on vivian sideroad the other day and he was saying he had seen a van from toronto dumping 20 to 30 raccoons down the road from his house this summer alone we have caught almost 20 raccoons in our bam raccoons are a problem for everyone in the area and now we know where they are coming from the bad part about it is even though the organization freeing the raccoons in the coun try is trying tosave the animals most of them will be shot by the local farmers we definitely have an overpopulation of raccoons and i think toronto should eutha nize the animals when they catch them instead of bringing them here mikevanveen stouffville law sets high fines for dumping wildlife raccoons imported into our area have been a problem which we have had to deal with over the past few years we in rural areas have had to suffer the consequences of folks coming up from the city and dumping raccoons fortunately there is a new fish and wildlife conservation law which prohibits such behav- iourthe law calls for a 25000 fine for anyone releasing wildlife more than one kilometre away from where the animal was captured if you see someone dumping wildlife obtain a licence number of the vehicle and report it to the ontario ministry of natural resources in aurora at 7137400 dumping of wildlife can also be reported by calling the mnr at 18002228477 as a resident of a rural area i welcome the stiff fines and am looking forward to strict enforcement of the law chuck suikki stouffville iiy jl letters should be no longer than ontarios health ministry was busy friday shooting out let ters to more than half of ontarios hospitals telling administrators to go back to the budget drawing board and get the numbers bal anced markham stouffville hospital received a letter but president dr jim maclean says they will just ignore it they havent any other choice york county hospital president dan carriere was certain hed be receiving a letter its likely york central in richmond hill will get its letter too its absolutely unbelievable just when we thought the province was getting it was understanding the challenges our hospitals and health care providers are facing with the dra matic growth in york region the min istry delivers another blow despite the best efforts of our three hospitals to get the message across the province continues to demand the impossible maintain highquality health care accessible to all residents l but dont spend any more money when 24000 new residents arrive in york region each year underfunded york region hospitals will not be able to serve new residents carriere says when he produces his recovery plan he hopes it will be clear to the health ministry that its impossible for the hospital situated in one of the fastestgrowing regions in canada to cut spending without being ridiculous for example planning to hire staff in spring and then fire them in the fall to add fuel to the hospital adminis trators legitimate fire are the statistics chronicling york regions population growth figures that indicate actual growth is outpacing forecasts by between 6000 and 11000 people this year if that growth continues the region will reach its llihillibn population tar get nine years ahead of schedule carriere says it may be up to the hos pitals to take action at the root of the problem attending ontario municipal board hearings and munici pal and regional council meetings to warn developers that the underfunded undersupported york region hospitals will not be able to serve new residents perhaps that will get the attention and the funding our hospitals deserve stouffville tribune serving the community since 1888 the stouffville tribune published every tuesday thursday
