m i high school honours its top student athletes bruce stapley correspondent it was a celebration of sport as stouffville district secondary school sdss held its annual athletic awards banquet thursday night it was also a family affair as the brothersister combo of danielle and shane timms were named outstanding junior male and senior female athletes respectively danielle who was cowinner of the senior girls award along with alison crowder was also named mvp of the senior girls basketball and girls slow pitch teams shane was midget boys volleyball mvp crowder was senior girls volleyball mvp amy mcelroy was given the honour as outstanding junior female athlete and was also co- winner along with stephanie rand of the junior girls badminton mvp nomination ian hazlewood took home the outstanding senior male athlete trophy he was also boys track mvp it was the second year in a row that crowder and hazlewood found their names on the top senior tro- phies hazlewood who was also on the badminton cross country and senior boys volleyball teams was trib- uted by sdss coach jim fletcher who called him a dedicated athlete who constantly strives for excel lence he noted hazlewood was a mainstay of the schools crosses country- team the past five years contributing to three yraa championships piette acknowledged crowders multisport profi ciency in awarding her the senior girls trophy danielle timms also drew prajse from her coaches shane timms was called an all round athlete who sports is a natural born leader and competitor by sdss coach christa bradburn coach heather henricks said mcelroy worked to excel in basketball volleyball badminton lacrosse and soccer she also exhibits great team spirit said henricks she emits an aura a spirit a glow id like to be on any team she was on lillian boyd was also a repeat winner as she was given the homestead award for the second straight year the award goes to the sdss student who best exemplifies the qualities of student leadership ath letic involvement and organizational support for the schools athletic programs she has a genuine concern for others said phys ical education teacher sue leroy and she saved all of our hides in the phys ed department at least once this year alex chacinski who was the 199697 outstanding junior female athlete was presented with the jim rehill sportsmanship award chacinski was praised by henricks as being a tower of strength as an athlete for her nothing ever goes wrong said henricks because each bump along the road is just turned intqanother learning opportunity henricks
