extraordinary musical suc cess story shortly after his arrival at good wood corrigan in a discussion with former school principal stan todd asked what do you want of me of the band the principal replied put goodwood on the map corrigan accepted the challenge and today just threeandahalf years later having attained local regional and national acclaim the goodwood public school band is indeed on the map with the bachelor of fine arts degree from york university and a be from nipissing teachers college corrigan brought his combined love and enthusiasm for music and teaching to the children of goodwood corrigan remembers his first year at goodwood 199495 as a learning year that year saw the grades seven and eight music students combine to form a 35member band some of those students had some musical back ground others had no musical training something big is happening here music teacher lyle corrigan whatsoever it was a year he says in which i got my bearings honed my own musical skills and got to know the students the following year corrigan decided on a different approach in february 1996 he entered the band which had now grown to 46 members in the sunderland music festival and far exceeding all expectations they received the gold standard level of excellence award four days later the band entered the southern ontario band festival in scarborough where they received the silver standard a monthandahalf later accepting an invitation to enter the national finals in toronto the goodwood public school band com peting with bands across the country walked away with bronze at this point corrigan said he and the kids realized that something big is happening here they the kids werenqw rarin to go they practiced after school during lunch breaks weekends and during christmas holir days as well as the normal twice-a- week practices all this enthusiasm and hard work paid off the following year 1997 entering the same festivals again sunderland southern ontario and the national finals in ottawa they won gold gold and silver respectively by then the band having grown to 55 members had become an entity please see page life mmimmmmm
