could empathize strongly with every one involved as a onetime dog owner and some one who has grandchildren i am always very nervouswhen dogs espe cially large ones are around i feel par ticularly sorry about the tragedy here because it was no ones fault it wasnt an irresponsible dog owner and i cant think of anyone who wouldnt be extremely upset over what happened i dont know what to say its so sad for the parents of the little girl and for the dog owners said les broadbent i cant imagine having to deal with either side of it the hardship that these people are going through is so multifaceted observed frank may its so tragic for the family that lost their daughter howcould you ever replace a child and for the dog owners they have to deal with the fact their dog killed a lit- tie girl but it was still their family dog and theyve had it for five years so youve got really mixed emotions there as well i am very saddened by this said charlerie jones its a tragedy beyond speaking for everyone involved and no one assumes that anyone will forget this or get over it because the lives that have been affected are altered forever dog on death row mosley a 120pound trempes throat wednesday killing the young girl this is an enormous tragedy stouffvilles cudahy said people generally dont realize the potential an animal has bullmastiffs are gen erally veiy laid back and gen tle dogs who dont present themselves as aggressive ani mals he added but all animals have natural instincts that can lead to an attack there was no way the family couid known what might set the dog off cudahy said these are dogs were talking about theyre not human beings they cant be rational ized with the bullmastiff was originally used as a guard dog to ward off poachers the game wardens would set the dogs loose in the middle of the night to search for poachers they were ideal because they were so quiet theyd just sneak up on the poachers and bite them in the rear end cudahy these are clogs were talking about theyre not human beings they cant be rationalized with dog expert jerry cudahy said and theyd just hold them there until the game warden caught tip the poachers could nt move atallmastiffs are known for their very strong jaws the breed was also used in south africa to guard the dia mond riiines against miners sneaking back in at night to steal diamonds but those dogs were trained to kill no police force would v use a bullmastiff as a police dog cudahy said the main purpose of a police dog is for tracking and on occasion pro- tection mastiffs are too unpre dictable cudahy added that all dogs have the potential to bite not just bullmastiffs even a little chig huahua has the capability to bite the only difference is that the bull mastiff has the strength to kill and maybe a chi- huahua would leave the victim heeding a few stitches cudahy said god i wish thaf little girl just needed a few stitches for more please turn to the opinion page 4 and
