banquet this june due to a lack of schools choosing to take part in the pro gram the sdss spartans boys fastpitch team wont get the chance to make it five york region athletic asso ciation yraa titles in a row sdss boys phys ed head dave connell said the sdss school was one of only three teams to register this year caus ing officials to scrap the pro- gram connell said there were three reasons behind the drop in inter est the first is that weve domi nated fastpitch the past decade or so stated connell the second is that hardball is becoming so popular and the third is politics the spartans under coaches bill mcknight and tami waters swept to the york crown the past four seasons and were undefeated in three years the team won six regional titles over the past 10 years going as sports notes far as the finals on three other occasions last june mcknight announced his intention to step down as sdss boys fastpitch coach after 10 years tracksterstune up stouffville district secondary school sdss athletes were off and running at the recent york region athletic association yraa indoor track and field championships at york univer sity luke williams covered- the 400metre distance in a time of 574 seconds to take the third- place ribbon in the junior boys category he also had a sixth- place finish in the junior boys 800m race julianne lowrie was fourth in both the senior girls 800m and 1500m aaron altmans last second sprint put him into sixth place in the senior boys 60m dash altman who quali fied for the final with a time of 736 in his heat rah the final in 745 seconds tracey hocher running in her first race ever at the york facility finished strong to place seventh in the midget girls 400m with a time of 7051 sec onds grade 9 student travis mcmaster pushed it to the limit to place ninth out of 49 com petitors in his first ever midget boys long jump darts league champions decided they celebrated another suc cessful year of bulls eyes and good times last friday at the legion as the stouffville darts league held its annual awards night banquet the championship hardware was given out to the fullertons 1 team which defeated amaret- to in the finals held earlier this month the winning squad included bob baron captain robert spencer roman chashinsky john bell donny turner don curtis barry andison and jim burnes the nucleus of the fullertons crew which also won the regu lar season championship has been together three years it was their first title the local darts league includes 14 teams and has been in operation four years games are played weeknights through out the fall and winter season get involved the mayors task force on charities markham needs you to get involved and use your talents and interests for the benefit of our community council recently formed the mayors task force on charities in the town of markham to address the issue of charity casinos and to examine how to assist the nonprofit and charitable sector in our community in meeting
