on an application for amendment to a zoning order minister of municipal affairs and housing ontario in one of the latest ice outs in recent memory the ministry noted that it wasnt until april 29 when the majority of ice left the lake the ministry noted the only bright spot in the early season took place for those who pursued lake trout the colder than normal spring produced a larger window of opportunity for those who went after lake trout by trolling with planer boards or flatlining it was noted that fish remained shallow near rocky points sunken shoals and around islands for more than two weeks anglers pursuing other species however experienced some tough outings the late ice out and colder water temperatures put a damper on the annual spring smelt run ministry surveys noted only those who were persistent in venturing to different sites over a threetofour day stretch hit the jackpot the annual spring yellow perch run at the atherley narrows was also adversely affected last springs run was reported to be three to four weeks later than normal the ministry cited those who sought black crappies found the spring run to be brief or sporadic at best the ministry was at a loss to explain the inconsistency in catches the cold spring temperatures also played havoc with the northern pike fishery the ministry pointed out that the below- normal temperatures delayed weed growth which are areas where these fish are lured to feed while the spring months saw anglers scratching their heads the summer and fall fishery more than made up for the slow start hot dry weather conditions resulted in increased angling opportunities throughout much of the summer and the fishing throughout the fall remained stable right up until the colder weather arrived in november the ministry noted largemouth bass were in their usual shallow locations dur ing the early summer these included under boat docks pencil reeds or undercut cattail lined shorelines by mid august these fish moved to deeper depths with weeds those who went after smallmouth bass noted that a good number offish were still on their beds on opening day but as summer progressed anglers reported excellent catches around georgina and thorah islands the warmer summer produced good pike fishing in local- tions where weed growth was in evidence black crappies were difficult to find duringthe summer but fall movements could be defined in the various feeder rivers the fall season also saw defined movements of yellow perch with big schools congregating out of the virgina basin area of the lake fishing
