stouffville went hunting big game in the cold and snow of north ern ontario over the weekend returning home with their limit the spirit overcame a physical stur geon falls lynx to prevail 64 in a rough house affair in front of a boisterous crowd friday night the visitors finished strong to bag the timmins golden bears 52 saturday the big weekend not only enabled the stouffville squad to stay within two points of the streak ing lindsay mus- kies in their bid to escape the provin cial junior a hock ey leagues phillips division cellar it also marked the first time a team in their division has swept both games of an interlocking set with the northern ontario hockey association the guys fought hard for their two points in both games said a buoyant spirit head coach dan larmer it was nice to see them break out like that after six losses in a row they were getting pret ty frustrated the spirit somehow managed to endure a highway grind that saw them arrive in sturgeon falls late friday after noon only to hit the road some five hours later for the seven hour drive to timmins after checking into a hotel for the day they faced off against the bears saturday night then headed home immediately afterwards the spirit quickly found their legs fri day taking a 21 first period lead they made it 53 after two periods with the two teams taking goals in the third our guys were ready to go at the drop of the puck praised larmer while the wild and wooly match was marked by four fights larmer said his players avoided unnecessary penalties the spirit were led by their third line of ed kearney scott martin and joe byles byles picked up a pair of goals his first since joining the club last month martin had a goal and an assist to be named the games first star kearney earned two assists darcy king jeflf marshall and kevin edgar also scored saturday in timmins the spirit broke a 22 tie with a trio of unanswered goals in the third once again the stouffville club unleashed its secret weapon as the kear ney line was instrumental in the victory martin notched his seventh of the year while being named the games first star for the second straight night king with his team leading 19th edgar with his 17th paul zderic with his first and rick ey rideout with his initial goal of the sea son rounded out the scoring brian fish and mike micheff who returned to the lineup friday after serving a sixgame suspension each had two conditioning a factor larmer credited saturdays strong fin ish to his teams superior conditioning it was the second game of a twogame road trip we were just hoping theyd have enough gas left in the tank for another 20 minutes but it turned out they had more than enough when they came out and scored three goals to win it it was a testimony to our conditioning larmer fingered kearney martin and byles for their key role in the weekend sweep theyre our grinding line theyre not big guys but theyre all excellent skaters who get in your face
