pieces in this satur days silent auction at the latcham gallery librarygallery employee gayle dunford describes the piece for her photo by steve somerville starship troopers a campy entertaining trip its nice tosee that director paul verhoeven has returned to the terri tory where he seems most comfort able having temporarily abandoned the scifi genre after the brilliant robocop and the interesting total recall to make the two appalling sexually charged dramas basic instinct and showgirls verhoeven is back to spaceics with starship troopers based on robert heinleins novel starship troopers is a 100 million effectsfilled extravaganza that is a hit and miss affair after a distant planet of bugs fires a giant asteroid at earth killing millions of people the planet decides to retaliate in typical macho military fashion by sending a squadron of gungho guerrillas off to the attackers planet to kill them but the attack doesnt go as smoothly as planned and the troops are forced to rethink their strategy after discovering the hard way that the creatures are more intelligent than the earthlings first thought they return to fight another day and guess who wins this time not a real tough one to figure out in terms of pure entertainment casper van dien is overshadowed by killer bugs in starship troopers value starship troopers deserves full marks the effects are as daz zling and spectacular as they are gruesome and the script is punctu ated with a dark sense of humor but the film is also conflicted and that conflict tends to bog it down occasionally despite its campy 50s feel verhoeven and screen writer ed neumeier feel it neces sary to introduce a romance angle that is corny without being so corny its funny it seems that the film is also miss ing a punch line over the course of two hours were led to believe that its casting a negative light on the killemall military mantra that the american approach to fighting battles that is eliminate the enemy on their own turf before they become a threat on yours is wrong yet when the film ends we arent left with that feeling screen scene stuart green neumeier who scripted the dark and eerily satirical robocop has created a future where only soldiers are citizens and where interactive television spews out promilitary propaganda in the form of 40s- style draft films 24 hours a day those flaws and the fact that the cast of relative unknowns seems to be oblivious to the humor and irony that gives the script its edge detracts from what could have oth erwise been an excellent total pack age as it is starship troopers is reduced to slightly above average status that despite its shortcomings is still entertaining grant fullerton recording live on saturday fullertons tonight all the hits with tony and pierre friday live
