vandorf showed great support for frank martino it was steve pliakes who won the race for ward 1 at 930 pm martino had 62 per cent of the polls reporting but by 1030 pm pliakes steamrolled through the ward taking more than half the support with him 1 thought i would have done better he said it shows you have to work for what youre elected for youre not going to slide through anything pliakes said hell take a cautious approach as the new councillor the majority of people said they dont want too many changes now we have provincial downloading of ser- martino vices we cant spend money when theres no money to spend he said ward 5 scala retains seat from an early lead of 59 per cent incumbent judy scala beat out challenger judy saabas with a final tally of 796 votes to her rivals 739 in a close race monday night throughout the evening scala never lost her lead although saabas gave her a good run for her money i am feeling great said scala first of all i am very proud that the residents of ward 5 put me in for another three years i want to make sure the secondary plan goes through in the downtown core and to continue working on all the objectives i outlined in my cam paign 1 want to initiate more projects and i am very positive about the future scala vowed to ensure the continua tion and stability of the municipality work towards con trolled growth encourage business growth ensure open government and public participation and work with young people in town as part of her threeyear action plan saabas was also delighted with the support she received and pleased with her campaign it was so close all the people that worked with me worked very hard and i want to thank them 1 think this just proves that a lot of people are not happy but i wish judy scala all the best one won a narrow victory in whitchurch-stouf- fvilles ward 2 carroll it was a seesaw election for carroll and his challenger helene johnson finally the 35yearold landscaper was declared the winner with 488 votes compared to 422 votes for johnson for the first half of the evening johnson held a comfort able lead however the tables turned when the sixth of the wards eight polls was reported carroll was thrilled with his victory i really enjoyed the campaign he said i covered 90 per cent of the area i met some wonderful people his campaign focused on environ mental issues as well as the need for peter dobrich took ward 3 in a photo finish last night defeating sophie angelis by 10 votes angelis started out ahead but dobrich quickly closed the gap and then gained the votes needed to win the sherban who expressed thanks to her neighbours and con stituents for their support said shes earned the right to sit on council ive represented ward 6 the past three years with my input at council meetings through delegations for recreation facilities and through petitions regarding the new town hall i think the people in my ward were well aware of that kostandoff expressed disap pointment in defeat suggesting the cam paign had centred around the issue of making a fulltime job of being a coun cillor the job pays 10000 a year if someone wants to make that a full time job the more power to
