were brought back to earth with a pair of weekend road losses in provincial junior a hockey league play the spirit who had won five and tied one in their previ ous seven outings fell 43 to the ruddock division leading tren ton sting on friday then never got it going in a 62 loss to the kingston voyageurs on sunday the spirit seemed on their way to an impressive victory friday carrying a 30 lead into the third period on goals by dave zelasko kevin edgar and jeff keillor then everything that could have happened did happen said spirit head coach dan larmer those happenings included a wraparound goal by the host sting followed by a score from a scramble and a shorthanded marker that went in off a spirit player in sundays game at kingston the spirit trailed 50 going into the final 20 minutes before they began to offer some resistance jeff marshall and edgar final ly got the visitors on the board we didnt wake up until the third period lamented larmer who suggested his team may have been a little deflated fol lowing fridays disappointing defeat for edgar the weekend goals were his 11th and 12th of the campaign tops on the team he also added to his assist totals with a helper on sunday line- mate ryan king had two assists on friday despite the two losses the spirit managed to cling to a share of fourth place along with the couchiching terriers in the phillips division stand ings the spirit host the aurora tigers who are second in the phillips division on thursday at 730 pm the spirit travel to lindsay to play the lastplace muskies fri day then return to the rec cen tre for a setup by nick hawkins and brian taylor gave the clippers a 43 title game triumph over the markham waxers the clippers earned the right to contest the tournament title with wins of 74 over port credit 30 over applewood 32 over cooksville their only loss came in a 43 defeat to meadowvale geoff campbell mark carruthers and jesse maillet each counted six points to lead the clippers in scoring taylor and stephen relf had five points each with newcomer alex bollo chipping in with four chris flanagan hawkins smalley and dana mcdonald each had two points with mark sutcliffe adding a single taylor lougheed norman fretz and blake maynard all contributed strong efforts michael mcmanus and kyle martin were strong in goal martin earned the shutout over applewood in league play earlier in the busy week the clippers defeated whitby 31 downed nobletonking 31 and edged uxbridge 21 points came from maillet with four hawkins taylor sutcliffe bollo and car ruthers two each fretz flanagan relf and maynard one each the clippers who host uxbridge on fri day have won nine of their last 10 contests midget clippers ice two wins cory turgeon managed a hat trick to lift the print service midget games played last week the clippers picked up wins of 32 and 4- 1 over vaughan and sutton while falling 62 and 30 keswick and bradford adam craig had a goal and three assists while brandon jupp added a pair of goals taylor campbell chipped in with a goal and an assist with eric gainsbrook and steve brown each scoring once other assists went to warren taylor 2 chris schcll and luke harrison skating returning with three teams this season one bantam team and two midget crews will once again take to the courts for tournament play culminating in the provincial championships coach don forbes who initiated the program in the mid 1 990s has recruit ed the services of several assistants this year ken cooke and glen sealy will help forbes run the bantam team with christine cooke serving as team man ager former ontario volleyball associa tion technical director keith wasylik who was a coach with the stingrays midget ii team last season will oversee both midget squads for the 199798 campaign wasylik is a former member of the canadian national volleyball team ada jacquc will coach one of the midget outfits sponsors will include national sports cable tech and stouffville iga the bantam team which played tier 1 last season and took the bronze at last years provincial cup will include players from stouffville unionville vandorf uxbridge markham and thornhill among players hailing from stouf fville are meaghan crowder joanne crymble andrea meyer megan sealy and grace volpe its still too early to tell how this years edition will fare but i believe theyll do just fine said forbes we have some height this year and we have four returning members of last years bantam team the midget i stingrays were 1 1 th at the tier i provincials last year they had two golds and a silver in tourna ment play the midget ii stingrays took home a gold and a bronze in tournament action the bantams have tournaments scheduled for nov 15 university of torontos scarborough campus and dec 6 unionville hs the midget are scheduled for a nov 22 tournament in lindsay we look forward to an enjoyable 97- 98 season for all stingray teams and to playing some competitive and exciting volleyball said forbes mu
