and the oecta union representing 2700 elementary and secondary school teachers at the board broke off when teachers left mediation early monday morning as a result teachers have now begun legal strike action our legal strike here in york region separate schools may well continue after the provincial strike has been resolved if this happens parents should be aware that classes will continue to be cancelled as a service to parents who cannot make alternate arrangements schools will be open provided the board can ensure that children are safe and adequately supervised however parents who are able are urged to keep their children at home for the duration of the provincial strike busing will continue to be suspended busing will resume once the provincial strike has ended but delays may be expected principals and viceprincipals will be in the schools the board offer the board has offered teachers a twoyear contract which includes no reductions to teacher salaries no reductions to current staffing levels and ensures that york region separate school teachers remain among the highest paid separate school teachers in the province the board has agreed to the independent fact finders recommendation to fully finance one of the three pay increments which teachers lost during the ndps social contract in the early 1990s this offer would increase the boards teacher salary costs
