t the tribune thursdayoctober 30 1997 p 23 local runners fare well in canadian marathon on the run fred robbins the canadian international marathon held on sunday oct 19 in toronto for the third year is trying to maintain the marathon scene in the big to most of the major cities in the united states now hold a marathon with close to 10000 people the local business community should take a look at the potential for cash influx if a group of marathoners from south of the border came to canada they could get an advantage with the canadian dollar being down almost a two for one sale in the 3700 crowd most chose to run the half marathon section jim goudis of stouffville improved his time by over four minutes he appeared to be full of energy when he finished 389th overall suzanne breenmunshaw trying to wrestle with a cold ran the half marathon distance the most challenging segment of the event was the yonge st run up the hoggs hollow hill that came into contrast with the downhill segment of the hoggs hollow hill which was most scenic with the fall foilage in full view for the runners to absorb breenmunshaw completed the route in 207260 this was just a little short of the two- hour goal which she could have achieved if she was not battling a cold the marathon man of stouffville kim kavluk was on his own mission to conqueror the dis tance again he was pressing hard the first half with a split at the 2 11 kilometre mark for 124251 a little fatigue was beginning to set in at the 30k some of his friends and teammates gave tremendous support and cheers as kavluk ran by at one point the first woman was closing in on him kavluk heard the announcer say here she is now the first woman as the mind rises up against the body trying to talk you into just walking the struggle becomes intense kavluks battle not to walk was on going in the last five miles a famous marathon quote is strange things happen after mile 21 you enter a different world peter fonseca 31 won in a time of 228263 for him it was an enjoyable day kavluk who finished in 255057 was pleased to qualify for yet another boston marathon kavluk said im still planning on maybe doing the philadelphia marathon yet this year a few other runners from stouffville appeared to give it their best effort as well jonathan hare ran the marathon in 326061 john beller- by also familiar for his triathlon win completed the course in 258092 in the half marathon victor szabo came through at 1 3700 and mark tuck was done with a time of 1 4439 the only person listed from uxbridge was norine blyth who finished in 20059 as all those runners rethink the task accomplished or the battle won they rest the sore legs for a day they continue to gaze into the hope of maybe in the near future to be back out training for the next hard run or maybe the race of a lifetime league midgets still undefeated three blowouts and a draw that was the bottom line for the print express midget clippers over the past two weeks jj as the stouf fville squad remained undefeated in play the clippers rallied from a 20 deficit to tie gcorgina 22 on the road in a hard hitting penalty- dominated affair to kick off the four game stretch travelling to east gwillimbury the stouffville crew stuck to its game plan and dissected the sharon team by a 70 count the clippers bounced ajax 14- 0 in their next road outing before finally returning home to dish out a 200 shellacking to pickering in a game that saw clippers players wear black arm bands in memory of stouffville teen david giles who died last week leading the scoring
