native of holland a country which lives and breathes soccer alfons sniffed a recruit in the making i saw the name van maris and 1 said weve got a dutchman grab him alfons vividly recalls casey van maris agreed to come on board as a coach and was club presi dent two years later he would go to establish himself as a fixture in soccer not only in stouffville but in york region ontario and across canada his death earlier last week comes just 1 1 days before he was to have been honoured with a lifetime membership at the annual banquet of the ontario soccer association the fete is to be held on the same day as the grand opening of the 12-mil- lion ontario soccer centre in wood- bridge a magnificent indooroutdoor facility which saw casey play such a crucial role in bringing it to reality he was the driving force behind it said alfons adding that his country man had been involved in planning permits and other key aspects of the eentre which include two outdoor fields and an indoor setup including a fullsized soccer field casey stepped down as treasurer of the canadian soccer association to concentrate on the centre this past year said alfons its the largest indoor soccer facility in canada he said casey will be honoured post humously at the ontario soccer asso ciation gala following the opening caseys list of soccer appointments over the past two decades is an affir mation of alfons ability to ferret out talent in the making after his twoyear term as stouffville club president casey became presi dent of the york region soccer league for two years following that with a stint as york region soccer associa tion president then it was on to the treasurers post and then the presidency of the ontario soccer association he then turned his focus on the national scene becoming treasurer of the canadian soccer asso ciation along the way he was instru mental along with the local clubs martin johannessen in bringing lights to the rcc centre soccer fields noting caseys equally noteworthy career as founder of gormleys park lane nurseries alfons suggested his native country holland is known for two things soccer and tulips casey he suggested was already well versed in one when he first appeared on the local soccer scene in 1977 alfons a soccer fanatic who has coached at all levels throughout york region and currently publishes ontarios inside soccer magazine could only lament the passing of this soccer giant at the tender age of 65 but he prefers to believe that his fel low dutchman isnt finished yet caseys building a clubhouse in heav en when we arrive hell rally helps tame golden bears 1 07 bruce stapley correspondent it was a wild west shoot out at the rcc centre saturday with the host spirit of stouffville saving the heavy artillery for the late going the spirit capped another impressive comeback with an even half dozen thirdperiod goals to bag the trenton golden bears 107 the spirit trailed 41 after the first period of the provincial junior a hockey league contest and were down 64 heading into the final 20 minutes they came back to tic it early in the third but the bears regained the lead on a power play marker mid way through the period but the spirit knot ted it again two minutes later then poured it on for the remainder of the game to run off with the two points once again the spirits big line of kevin edgar darcy king and geoff keillor were the architects of the victory edgar scored high eighth and ninth goals of the season while setting up a quartet of markers darcy king had five assists with keillor chipping in with two goals and a helper edgar had had two goals and 1 1 assists in the past three games to spearhead the spirit win streak which has seen the club climb out of the leagues phillips division basement into the fourth and final playoff spot scott martin also had a pair of goals to go with two assists his second scorcwent into an empty bears net andrew patriarche dave zelasko jeff marshall and mike michcff rounded out the spirit assault spirit goalkeeper john tamburro who replaced corey lloyd at the beginning of the second period was sharp in picking up his first win of the season spirit head coach dan larmcr was beaming after the victory saying his teams recent performance justifies the confidence he had in them despite los ing seven of their first nine games we were down but wc knew the losses were against some really good teams said larmer but theyre play ing with a lot of confidence now were beating the teams we should be beating weve got 1 1 points in 1 2 games thats 500 hockey larmcr whose team gave up five power play goals said hes still concerned with the number of penalties his team is taking weve got to stay out of the penalty box when were playing five on five we dominate almost every team we play however the coacli conceded that penalties arc the price you pay for an aggressive approach to the game we built our team around aggressive penalties but the lazy penalties and retaliation penalties theyve got to stop larmer had nothing but praise for edgar ironi cally the 19ycarold newmarket resident had come close to being axed from last years spirit squad the coach admitted last year i wasnt even going to keep him now hes like a brand new kid ive never seen anyone turn around their life like he has its unbelievable hes averaging three points a game larmer suggested his teams late game flurries arc no fluke crediting a stringent conditioning program for their third period reserve thats why we do the running every monday night he said referring to
