ffr r cm et lu o 1- o q lu lu z d cq cxi j- markham home shows country store has always been a crowd favourite a doubledecker bus brings people from the parking lot to one of the buildings this was so popular 11yearsago that organizers are still doing it today h via r when the markham home show started 15ycarsago it attracted 200 vendors and demonstrators and 30000 people liea for mailmatih show came in the lufimt lisa cartwright features fifteenyearsago an idea came to businessman fred coxe in the middle of the night i was looking for different ways to sell and market my products said cox who at that time owned unio rivi lie broadloom he decided to put on a home show in the growing com munity of markham that monday he approached the markham fair board and presented his idea he would sell space to vendors in the community and put on a home show that would bring allth vices consume their home nobody had- run there of that nature said cox when he told his friend about his idea he gave him some muchheeded advice my friend looked at me and said you heed some help and he gave me the name of jane simard cox contacted simard who agreed to help the two sat down and began planning the threeday event we literally built it from the ground floor up said cox the pair had just four months to convince the ven dors that they would benefit from the show market it to the consumers and learn show business because cox was hosting his show in five different buildings he decided to build boardwalks so people could move comfort ably between buildings the pair then decided to place canopies over the board walks to protect the consumers from the ele ments once that prob lem was solved others arose a month before the show we realized that the buildings werent heated or insulated said cox the two scram bled but found a company who would supply huge heaters to blow hot airintp hhe buildings 5ut jw settipgup meii ihere on the first the- show organizers realized that the horse stalls hadnt been cleaned out ipi simard cox and their team of volunteers shoveled manure and put up deodorizers to get rid of the smell finally opening day arrived at 10 oclock in the morn ing i sat back and said i won der if the people will show up or not arid they did in droves the first sunday of the first year it was raining said sirhard the building was so packed pt please see page 12 ii ttit i i t i 1 t i j
