even with their two playoff rivals when they face off with the cobourg cougars at the rec centre thursday night the spirit climbed to within two points of the lindsay muskies and couchiching terriers when they edged the terriers 43 on the road friday night the terriers and muskies are currently tied for fourth place in the provincial junior a hock ey leagues phillips division standings with nine points each the spirit are just behind with seven points were going to be in a dog fight with lindsay and couchiching for the final playoff spot said spirit head coach dan larmer were now three and oh against those teams so were making some noise with the terriers out to avenge a lop sided loss to the spirit in the stouf fville teams home opener sept 18 the spirit short circuited the couchiching teams plans when they jumped out to a 20 first period lead friday they car ried a 31 edge into the final 20 min utes dave zelasko darcy king jason ellis and andrew patriarche were the stouffville marksmen it was the first goal of the season for patriarche and ellis with king and zelasko bagging their seventh and fourth respectively winger kevin edgar kept up his strong play of late setting up all four spirit scores the win was all good news for the spirit which has been plagued by slow starts penalty problems and a tenden cy to give up too many opposition shots we had 20 shots in the first period and we outshot them 2918 on the night said larmer it was the first time all season we held the opposition to under 20 shots and thats what weve been aiming for also we only took four penalties and we killed all four of them its starting to come around the icing on the cake was that the spirit clicked on three of their power play opportunities larmer said the win which snapped a two game losing streak came as a big boost for his players theyre working hard its good to see them get some reward corey lloyd came up with a strong effort between the pipes for the stouf fville outfit corey evening smooth sailing for major novice clippers the ida major novice clippers are turning out to be stouffvilles best kept hockey secret this season the clippers carried a season record of seven wins a tie and no losses into the thanksgiving week end tournament in markham then skated all the way to the finals before enduring their first loss of the season in a 32 championship loss to ft erie the clippers who won four straight to bring home the gold from the st thomas tournament in late september kicked off the markham event with a pair of ties against tougher competition but a solid win in game three advanced the stouffville crew to the semifinals where they blanked the host team 40 before falling just short in the title tilt point getters for the clippers over the weekend were nick tournament at the rec centre on sunday plwu by sjoerd witteveen local teams competitive in a classic tournament a pair of stouffville pools platoons ended up in the deep end against their scarborough opponents at the annual stouffville classics old timers hockey tournament played over the weekend at the rec centre the towns rand pools squad was ousted in an overtime shoot out by the scarborough old devils after sundays c division championship match had resulted in a 11 regulation time standoff betz pools another stouffville outfit was edged 21 by scarboroughs rinkles in the 45 and over division final the rand pools crew had fallen to the old devils in round robin play while the betz brigade handed the rinkles outfit its only loss of the weekend when they blanked them 30 in the preliminary round united woodwork a stouffvillescarbor- ough mix defeated markhams remax team 4- 1 in the a division final the teams had tied 5- 5 in round robin play in the b division showdown it was the york region silver hawks a team comprised of elementary school caretakers over the scar borough classics in the championship match the hawks had previously fallen 43 to the classics in the round robin hofstee paddles her way to a strong performance bruce stapley correspondent former stouffville resident michelle hofstee got to paddle with the worlds best at the 1997 world white water rodeo championships on the ottawa river last month and she didnt look out of place the 24yearold stouffville district secondary school sdss graduate placed fourth overall in the eddyline competi tion and ninth in hole ride at ii the threeday competition held sept 57 hofstee who currently resides in langlcy bc was delighted with her showing at the event which include only expert and professional levels its just my first year compet ing she said im really happy with how it turned out the eddyline event involved kayaking in waters where upstream and downstream cur rents meet hole ride is a discipline where kayakcrs negotiate waters under a ledge of falling waters and are required to surf the water as if it- was an ocean- wave- hofstee has been kayaking for six years and earlier this year made the canadian freestyle kayaking team she trains three times a week and is hoping to compete in the next world event in two years i hope to be able to go to the next world championships in new zealand in 1999 hofstee was an accomplished basketball and volleyball player and coach at sdss she is currently completing her master of education degree in coaching studies at the uni versity of victoria 4
