whitchurchstouffville deputy fire chief mur ray emmerson said by the time the fire was detect ed the blaze had spread beyond the chimney to the walls if it had been left unattended much longer it fire deft would have been very serious said emmerson cause of the fire is unknown at this time no one was injured emmerson reported joan ransberry council hopefuls square off for voters in ballantrae and mussel mans lake joan ransberry staff reporter voters in the musselmans lake and the ballantrae area will have a chance to hear from the political hopefuls at an election forum scheduled for oct 29 beginning at 730 pm the meeting is being held at the ballantrae community centre mayoralty candidates incum bent wayne emmerson and mike watson as well as ward 2 candi dates helene johnson and mark carroll will take to the stage to try to woo the voter the meeting is being hosted by the ballantrae community centre board as well mayoralty contenders and ward candidates in wards l and 3 will take part in a similar forum on nov 4 beginning at 7 politics pm at the vandorf community centre this forum will include emmer son squaring off against watson it also includes candidates steve pli- akes and frank martino in ward 1 and peter dobrich and sophie angelis in ward 3 bad behaviour targetted at local schools mikeadler staff reporter many area public schools have a variety of new ways to help stu dents learn better behaviour get along with each other or settle dif ferences without fighting and these training programs and materials seem to work 85 per cent of the time a recent school board survey suggests when the kids think of the place as being safe you know youre on the right track said ron robbins principal of aldergrove public school in markham just using the materials in a con sistent manner can bring more peace to the school yard and class room said robbins a member of a resource committee formed to sup port the public boards safe schools program the resource group spent years researching material before a two- year effort was made to supply interested schools said karen cooperbrown viceprincipal at whitchurch highlands public school in stouffville we looked to see what worked education best with all kinds of kids said cooperbrown a member whose own school will start using trained students as conflict mediators on monday the students dont break up schoolyard fights but are instruct ed to help resolve arguments the school hopes once their role is explained other pupils will approach them at recess when they have a problem she said margaret mclennan left main street they took a hard look at both the plan and the place the previous business which closed in august had a bad reputation sammys boot bar and grill was linked to drug users and dealers motorcycle gangs and people who fought with their fists with their feet and on occasion with base ball bats sammys did become a terrible place said kucharski but its gone now kucharski is up front he was a coowner of sammys he and his partner have parted company with plaza owner ted zaharchuk as a new partner the kucharskis are not only expanding the restaurantbar theyre determined to make chasers a decent lawabiding fun loving spot for main stream people to enjoy from the day chasers opens some people will not be welcome im not letting trouble in the door said kucharski with seating for 110 chasers has potential said dorene my husband has 18 years experience in this business ill work along side him well be handson managers with the place open from 1 1 am to about 3 am itll keep us busy she added as well as a face lift and lots of spit and polish chasers is expand ing to take in the beckers store which closed recently with about three weeks to go to the opening chef arnold stain- mez is designing his menu which includes steaks burgers pasta salads sandwiches and mexican food local disc jockey jj juke box will provide the music while live entertainment will be featured about once a month as well a quiet lounge area is being built its a spot for people who want to kick back relax and chat said kucharski chasers staff is a trained staff the servers have all taken the smart server
