st the tribune thursday september 4 1997 p 11 arts the tribune photographer travelled the world for dance shots kate gilderdale correspondent david streets skill in capturing the world of dance through photography which has won him wide acclaim in canada has now brought him interna tional recognition this summer the stouffville resident spent several weeks photographing dancers from some of the most presti gious companies in the world to pro mote the orange county performing arts centers 1998 international classic dance season ive worked for them a number of times over the last four years through a contact at the national ballet of cana da said street back in may i was booked to go down to california to photograph some new board directors in orange county two weeks before he was due to leave he received a call asking if he would be interested in photographing a number of international dance companies for the organizations 1998 brochure half an hour later i hung up and said to the kids im off to cuba and italy and france and england can you look after yourselves the center itself is one of the largest privatelyfunded theatre complexes in the united states and receives no gov ernment grants its been open 10 years and has always had a dance season this year they wanted to expand it although photographs were available from each company streets contact wanted the brochure to have a specific cohesive format which could be achieved only by using a single photog rapher and it wasnt just his dance background which made him an excel lent choice for the project one of the reasons this assignment came about is that i have a particular backdrop which i now know measures 17 x 30 feet and weighs 36 lb and i took it to all the locations as a result it looks as though all the dancers flew over to my studio for the photography when in fact it was the other way round it may have been easier for the dancers but it was no picnic for street it isnt easy flying into cuba with 10 pieces of camera equipment he observed wryly it took 20 hours to fly there because you cant go directly and i arrived in havana at 1230 am add to that the fact that he doesnt speak a word of spanish and its hardly surprising that just getting through cus toms was something of a challenge after completing his work with the national ballet of cuba i came back here for a day and a half and then flew to london england there he met up with his assistant and the two took off for genoa italy to photograph the bal- letto di toscana with only eight pieces of equipment his next stop was france and the national ballet of marseilles where he met the famed choreographer roland petit from there he and his assistant flew back to london to photograph the rambert dance company i came back on the sunday spent two days here attended youngest son alexs grade 8 graduation and left on the tuesday for new york to photograph the new york city ballet at the lincoln centre the brochure has been extremely well received he said its been a phenomenal success dance tickets for the season are way ahead of estimates and there have been many requests for additional copies of the brochure interest in his work has already been expressed by other organizations as a result of his involvement in the project he added streets work ranges from performing arts and corporate photography to pri vate
