dancecen- tre kristy kennedy has been accepted as a fulltime student at the school of toronto dance theatre the school is acknowledged as the nation al centre for training in modern dance in canada and its graduates have gone on to perform with such prestigious organizations as the danny grossman dance company desrosiers dance theatre martha graham dance company alvin ailey american dance company and toronto dance theatre kennedy who attended the summer pro gram in july went on to audition for the full- time threeyear program and was surprised and delighted when she was accepted anyone who has watched kennedy progress over her years at the dancecentre has seen her develop into an exceptionally- skilled performer whose talents were recog nized and nurtured from the start by studio director michele green kennedys decision to make dancing her career is relatively recent however i decided just last year i just figured its the one thing i really like to do i will never forget my last year at the dancecentre that was incredible there are so many memories its like family for me dancing with the same girls forever her first foray into the performing arts was as a three year old at greens preschool dance program at the whitchurchstouffville library green had recently moved into the area and wanted to assess the potential of establishing a dance school in town quickly attracting parents and students to her pro gram she moved from the library to the base ment at christ church anglican and from there to her own studio initially on mill street and later in its current location on commercial street a substantial core of stu dents moved with her and stayed until this year when many of them performed together for the last time in cinderella before moving on to higher education and careers the students and their teacher went from performances at stouffville district sec ondary school to annual recitals at the markham theatre attaining an enviable pro fessionalism along the way kennedy attend ed the arts york dance program at unionville high school graduating this year but green and the dancecentre provid ed the motivation which fed her to opt for a career in dance although the work could be gruelling i never had to drag myself to it i went because i wanted to be there she said and her efforts paid off her knowledge and technical skills so impressed the teachers at the school of toronto dance theatre that they invited green to attend the audition with her the director of the school said it wasnt just her strong technique but also her per sonality and performance ability and thats something she really worked to develop this year in cinderella said green who pointed out that kennedy was also accepted into the dance program at ryerson in toronto while green will miss her senior students she believes they will provide vital inspira tion for the upandcoming dancers at the studio theyve always had this older group to look up to and now they can see where the program can lead to uffville jaccept- ool of stallone is impressive in dark and gritty cop story guess what all those years you and i thought sylvester stallone was nothing more than a grunting muscle head incapable of doing little more on screen than shooting big guns and grunting adrian we were wrong the man can really act when he has to and act he does in his latest film the dark grit ty and thoroughly engrossing cop land stallone who beefed up for the role plays dowdy porky and partially deaf new jersey sheriff freddy heflin a man torn between his duties as a police officerand his allegiance to his friends a gang of corrupt nypd cops that live in the town when the hero cop nephew of one of the towns senior residents harvey keitel goes missing after he shoots two young black men the conspiracy of silence intensifies to the point where heflin can no longer cover for them with the help of his wellintentioned but tor mented nypd cop friend ray liotta and an internal affairs investigator robert de niro heflin sets out to expose the corruption screen scene stuart green written and directed by james man gold heavy cop land is an intrigu ing twist on the corrupt cop story mangold creates a world where nobody is perfect or innocent and nobility is the exception not the rule theres a fine line between good and bad hes also careful however to keep it in perspec tive and not paint all cops with the same brush but as good as mangolds script is its the stars who make it all work as well as it does stallone who hasnt really had to act since the first rocky film in which he was very good delivers a remarkablyunderstated performance that manages to capture heflins frustration anger and disgust while making him sympathetic and strangely likable similarly liotta as his tormented friend is a ball of pentup emotion waiting to go off while keitel and de niro are solid as usual cop land succeeds on many levels drawing the audience in and holding it captive for two hours as the story unravels an intense and riveting film it could well garner stallone an oscar nomination cop land caper a beefedup sylvester stallone stars in this intense and riveting police drama which could earn him an oscar nomination a rocker holly woods new and retro thursdays from elvis to now sunday its blues rb with the full count blues band thursday saturday
