that some one cares about their ambi tion someone who at 19 years of age won the 1953 british ladies amateur golf cham pionship a female golfer who has been victorious at the canadian amateur ladies golf champi onship 11 times and has won three major us amateur tournaments the most recent being the 1994 us womens senior amateur championship her name is marlene streit and she is arguably the most successful female amateur golfer in canada she has recently established a fund solely for the benefit of young golfers the money from the fund helps to pay for the girls travel expenses explains streit these girls need to learn the importance of playing in other countries as well as canada female golfers should be glad to have stre it in their corner she is after all a legend in the canadian female amateur golf scene she is a woman who truly loves the sport not just the competition the friendships she cultivates playing golf are more important to the vibrant athlete than the points she accumulates or the titles she gains yet the titles are numerous and impres sive aside from her various tournament wins she is an honored member and governor of canadas sport hall of fame as well as being in canadas golf hall of fame she was appointed to the selection commit tee of the royal canadian golf association hall of fame and is on the advisory panel of theclga yet streit still finds the time to encourage young golf hopefuls to reach their goals maintaining an attitude which shows she truly loves the sport but wants to have a well rounded life as well while golf is an important part of her life so are family and friends orts notes marissa stapley she also enjoys skiing sports and domestic hobbies such as sewing and rug hooking she is a busy lady to say the least streit is positive about the future of female ama teur golf which has seen a recent influx of participants its booming she enthuses women have more time and more money and dont just play golf with their husbands anymore she says that the world of womens golf is not particularly competitive most female golfers appear to share their down to earth attitude toward the sport its just women playing golf and having fun says streit streit will continue to golf and encourage others to play golf for as long as she can she is an honorary member of the toronto ladies golf club and plays regularly at york downs the stouffville area resident now plays on the senior ladies golf circuit lending her expertise to this area of golf streit is giving young female golfers an edge by letting them know the importance and opportunity of travelling and of keeping a balanced attitude from experience she knows how to be suc cessful in golf she also knows how important it is to have a mentor marlene attributes her own talent and suc cess to canadian professional golfer gord maclnnis whom she once caddied for as an aspiring young golfer maclnnis died in may of 1993 and is remembered fondly by marlene who says he always believed in her thus enabling her to believe in herself perhaps by helping young lady golfers and showing them she cares marlene is simply trying to give back a little of what maclnnis gave to her maybe one day a successful female golfer will say that part of the reason she excels at her sport is because a certain talented lady believed in her all spots filled for golf tourney bruce stapley correspondent the third annual mayors annual youth golf tournament scheduled to be held thursday at maples of ballantrae is sold out ah 280 spots have been filled for the event which should see a profit of 15000 the funds will be earmarked for special youth related programs in whitchurchstouffville the amount if realized would make this years tourney the most successful ever prior to the first tournament we did expect the youth of the community to benefit but this years event far exceeds our original target in only three years said mayor wayne emmer son with new major sponsors such as lafarge bell mobility heidelburg press the national basketball association stuart assoc etc this event is now complete emmerson said the tourney which includes a silent auction will the sun at the oasa peewee eliminations at chepstow the weekend of july 46 but while the stouffville squad was unbeatable in winning four straight games the second day of the provincial championship tournament heartbreaking defeats suffered on the first and third days of the competition forced them to settle for a fifthplace overall finish in the 23team race the top two teams advance to the eastern canada championships the stouffville boys were nipped 43 by paris in their opener friday fighting back after falling behind 40 in the first inning robert anderson had a triple with jordan marshall banging out a dou ble and a single the loss meant the stouffville outfit wouldhave to take the long route to avoid elimination the stouffville crew roared out of the gate with a 91 win over vaughan on sat urday as jon ferguson had a triple and two singles scott mcdougall tripled ferguson rapped a home run two dou bles and a single and ben bellissimo had a homer a double and a single to lead the team to a 133 romp over wyebridge in their next outing corey rice socked two triples and a single with marshall collecting a triple double and a single the stouffville bats exploded in a 232 win over vittoria in their fourth game as ferguson and bellissimo each belted two home runs to go with a single shot by marshall they then avenged their opening day loss to paris by posting a 40 win in game five to close out the day it was a great day said stouffville coach ted assinck whose team used an explosive offence and tight defence and pitching in the quartet of contests they just went out and did everything i asked them to do the following day saw the stouffville team finally bow out with a 64 extra inning loss to scarborough stouffville battled back from a tworun fourth inning
