whitchurchstouffville his torical society has organized a dis counted train ride on the york- durham heritage railway ydhr july 20 a potluck picnic follows the return trip at memorial park in stouffville the historical society for eight or nine summers has visited a historical site said stephen sword the societys past president in the past the society has visited museums and other historical sites across the province weve been to probably every museum within an hours drive he said the society has also had numer ous events in town including a dis cussion about the 1837 mackenzie rebellion conducting historic walking tours of town a tour of the 19th century victorian mansion called spadina house and placing historic markers on various histori cal sites including sangsters grove and ratcliff s lumber the society helped secure a paint ing of roy browns airflight with the red baron which can be seen hanging in stouffville district sec ondary school and has participated in the strawberry festival since 1988 this year the society is hosting a potluck picnic party following a trip on the ydhr i think this is the first time weve all gone on it said sword we did the hawthornbeeton railway be fore the ydhr started last septem ber but this is its first full operating season running tourist trains between stouffville and uxbridge on weekends and holidays until the middle of october were actually celebrat ing our tenth anniversary this year boasts sword we had a cake cutting in june the fun features a ride along the rails from stouffville s station at 115pm a 30minute break in uxbridge then a return trip to stouffville the potluck picnic will follow at memo rial park we do it in true potluck fashion said sword discounted tickets of 1350 for adults 720 for youths and 9 for seniors are available on a firstcome firstserve basis by calling sword at 6420342 once tickets sell out people may still purchase a ride on the train at regular prices and everyone is event will take place in october picnic to celebrate historical societys tenth year mayor tees off for teens in annual tourney jordan h green correspondent the third annual mayors golf tournament tees off at the maples of ballantrae on thurs day july 17 there are 280 players in the soldout event which aims to raise 15000 for stouffvilles youth programs if the tournament does raise the 15000 itll be the most successful youth fundraising venture to date i could have had four more groups but thats way more than i can accommodate said mayor wayne emmerson last year the golfers raised 11500 for various youth pro grams in town including softball and soccer teams a second ice pad even sending a kid to camp according to the mayor its been very good emmer son explained weve raised 20000 over two years this years sponsors include lafarge bell mobility heidl- burg press stuart and associ ates and the national basketball association the sponsors have donated prizes and items for a silent auc tion which will take place as part of the golf tournament all one can hope for is good weather but the mayor isnt wor ried well go rain or shine playground practice stouffviue mayor wayne emerson uses rotary club jordan h green correspondent there are new park benches at the stouffville cemetery the stouffville rotary club replaced the benches last tues day night were replacing them be cause the others are in pretty rough shape said brian croft the director of community activities for the rotary club people sit on them and they can go right through all the lumber was donated by schell lumber and stouff villes canadian tire donated the stain and hardware the only cost is the people power provided freely by the rotary club it gives us a sense of achie vement said croft the community project is one of many planned by the club of about 1 8 people which hopes to increase its member ship were just a new club start ing up again said croft these benches its something small but relevant unlike many service clubs the rotary club is open to both men and women we are open to both men and women said croft in most service clubs they have a mens part and a womans part they are separate the rotary
