tweak of the nose to those of us with a long established lovehate relationship with the sport sometimes referred to as a nice walk spoiled pat who for the past 27 years has been prepar ing young people to walk the fairways of life as director of a stouffville nursery school achieved a hole in one after just three lessons back on june 28 at the john evelyn golf course for pat the ace came as a result of her deciding it was time she finally learned the basics of the game in years gone by she had occasionally ventured out to the links as a form of passive outdoor recre ation combined with the ongoing adventure of never knowing just where the ball was going to go when and if she hit it an elbow problem led her to pack it in altogeth er a few years back but then she won a set of woods at this years ducks unlimited extravagan za in markham back in april the mother of three grown children signed up along with 35 or so other of her gender for a four- week womens golf clinic at the evelyn course just outside stouffville this spring under the adept tutelage of the courses pro dave woods she was finally able to get a grip on what works for her along with evelyn family matriarch patricia and her coclinic students louise renwick pat decid ed to head for a little scramble on the clubs exec utive par three nine hole course after last weeks clinic pat waggled her new graphitehandled three wood as she started down the 130yard sec ond hole she uncorked her newlyrefined swing then stood there and watched as the ball floated into the air it touched down then rolled as if being guided by a remote control device right into the cup i knew i had hit it well recalled pat then the girls said you got a hole in one the ace came as an unexpected highlight of sports notes bruce stapley what had been until then just another laid back monday evening on the course we were just enjoying our selves having a nice relaxing time said pat as if to rub it in for those of us who have been smacking golf balls with a vengeance for decades and never experienced the ultimate golfers euphoria pat credits woods and his able assistants for giv ing her what she needed just to be able to get the ball anywhere near the hole in such a situation hes terrific were really enjoying the lessons it would appear that woods and co have come up with the perfect approach for the novice golfer dont try to build rome in a day he just gives you enough so you can hit the ball just one or two pointers to get you started said pat woods signed her scorecard after her big tri umph along with her two golf partners i said to dave all i had wanted was to be able to hit the ball she said he replied well you hit it upon her arrival home the nursery school teacher kidded husband glen about having gradu ated her entry level course i said thats it ive finished golf but she concedes that like most who have taken up the game before her shell be back for more i love it im hooked like so many other women who are taking up the game she suggests the ladies have finally dis covered what their brothers have known for so long the men have been doing this for years now its our turn to get out there and have some fun but unlike some men pat wont allow the game to become an obsession the hole in one was a kick she offered but its really not that big a deal she insisted i wasnt that excited when you havent golfed a lot it just doesnt mean that much in the olden days they burned such heretics at the stake gibbons on track after inking major stock car sponsorship bruce stapley correspondent a sponsorship
