m vr lj cftf c i illil r 4 c st v l fl i i j 5 i i i v r t- the tribune tuesday july 8 1997- p7 newspapers in small towns last bastion of individualism dear editor quite often i visit friends in your area it is thoroughly enjoyable one of the highlights is reading your paper senior says teens get a bum rap dear editor this is in response to teen says respect should be reciprocal i am a senior citizen and i sympathize with 16yearold aidan boyd and all respectable stouffville teenagers who have been wrongfully labelled by the police because of a few bad apples aidan is saying that teens in general are treated like criminals with stares and glares from older residents is this the image the police have of our stouffville teens why are stouffville parents silent when aidan is saying that for two years the stouffville teens have been subjected to police harassment and verbal abuse being called every name in the book are parents in fear of the police or do they not believe their own children which is it aidan says the police refer to residents of musslemans lake as inbreds and junkies if this is so i believe the offi cers who made these remarks should be removed from the force aidan boyd sounds like a bright young man and seems more intelligent and compassionate than the bully in blue who allegedly abused him aidan knows that most officers on the force are decent and fair especially to young people that is to say most except the five per cent of bullies who should be removed from the force what can aidan and other teens do about an officer who abuses them or who denies them common decency and cour tesy first do as aidan did write to the editor i salute aidan for his bravery in doing so and i salute the tribune for printing the letter all too often the fears and pleas of our teens are ignored aidan can also complain to the police chief if you are not satisfied with the result you can write to the police complaints commissioner 47 sheppard ave east north york ont m2n 2z8 fax3148189 this agency is due to be closed down by the harris government because nobody spoke up in protest after that the police will investigate themselves with no one to monitor them it will be like conducting an investigation on your own mother or brother a farce at best of one thing you can be certain in any police investigation when given the option to admit any wrong doing or lie to cover up the officer will surely lie his tory repeats itself in your letter the police said that kids lie to their parents hmmm wonder who they learned it from i often stop and chat with a teen because by so doing i learn to under stand and help them our teens are made of much better stuff than that bully in blue so stop and chat with our teens come on parents come on teenagers the respectable stouffville teens like aidan boyd need our support when they are in the right what have you done to protest the injustice and the alleged police abuse to aidan boyd is he to be deserted in this protest with all the odds against him alyetman stouffville while having a coffee cant be sustained by acrimony again breaking its will i sincerely hope so small town newspapers are one of the
