event named cliff aiken its 1997 citizen of the year he has continually served the community since moving to stouffville almost four decades ago as a main st phar macist he has been a mainstaywith two stouffville serr vice clubs he is a member of the stouffville lions club for 36 years and was club president in 1 972 he was a lions zone chairman and was deputy district governor the sec ond highest position available to lions in canada hes a former director of the clubs camp kirk foundation which operates a summer camp for children with learning dis abilities mr aiken has been involved with the- stouffville legion since 1962 currently the legions awards chairman he was given a lifetime legion membership at that organiza tions recent 50th anniversary celebrations mr aiken who played an active part in helping organize the legions golden event is also a past chairman of the york region division board of the cnib mr aiken said service work has always come naturally to him its just a way of life i guess he said it gives me a feeling of being of some value to the community mr aiken added that the philosophy of the lions club and the legion is to look after people who are less fortunate for him to put some thing back in you dont want to take without giving mr aiken was bom and raised in torontos west end staving off the effects of the depression by working in gold copper and zinc mines in northem ontario and man itoba in his late teens and early 20s cliff aiken and his wife evelyn on a recent cruise the cou ple have been married for 53 years and have lived in stouf fville more than 40 years cliff has been in volved in a host of community activities congratulations cliff aiken from the stouffville tribune he joined the navy in 1 941 serving as sick bay atten dant on the canadian corvette sackville the ship the last of its type still in existence has been restored and is on display in the maritime museum of the atlantic in hali fax ns mr aiken who continues to be a trustee with the sackville still communicates with the ships captan who is now 96 years of age mr aiken received a pharmacy degree from the univer sity of toronto before spending 10 years with a toronto phamnaceutical company multiple sclerosis cost him the full use of a leg in the 1 950s the affliction led him and his wife evelyn to whom he has been married for 53 years to purchase the drug store that would become aikens pharmacy in the late 1 950s he never regretted it the best move i ever made in my life was to get the hell out of toronto he said aikens dedication to his customers saw him work six days a week 12 hours a day while opening up every second sunday he always insisted his cus tomers call him at home in the event of an after hours emergency he sold the business in 1 985 the aikens have four grown children two of whom were adopted mr aiken credits evelyn who is currently hos- pitalized with being an essential part of his success through the years any man is only as
