this year and the canada day celebrations are always the ctilmination of the weekend festivities one of the highlights was the tribunes presentation to a great member of our cornmunity our hats are also tipped to this years citizen of the year cliftaiken cliff is a stouffville legend and he has helped more people in this community than you would likely believe he also organized the legions 50th congratualtions cliff you deserve the honor we are all indebted to you as we continue the celebration of our 130th year we should try to keep the patriotism and pride which we show on july 1 alive and active in our country through out the entire year geese signs are needed in lemonville dear editor any person who loves nature and wildlife must appreciate miss ertls action taken in regard of speed limits in surrounding ham lets i live in the town of whitchurch- stouffviue but lately i have regu larly driven down mccowan rd south of stouffville rd i am very concerned about the speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour between stouffville rd and the intersection of bethesda sideroad going west where in the early spring lots of canada geese select their nesting grounds around the numerous ponds lining the road one might think this would be a reason to slow down and enjoy the sights but not so letters to the editor one day just south of bethesda i saw a canada goose killed by a car its intestines crushed out and a second goose honking nearby some weeks later at about the same location i saw two families of canada geese one with two and one with four young ones just cancer fundraisers were great dear editor on behalf of the canadian can cer society i would like to thank you for covering the markhamwhitchurchstouffville units recent fundraising cam paign the residential doortodoor campaign raised 120000 daf fodil days brought in 20000 and our kickoff event jailnbail raised 30000 these projects would not have been such a suc cess without your coverage of our events we thank the community for their tremendous support in addi tion we would like to acknowl edge all of the volunteers who con tributed many hours of time to these projects the canadian cancer society is a national communitybased orga nization of volunteers whose mis sion is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quali ty of life of people living with can cer joanne reynolds communications chair markhamwhitchurch- stouffville unit canadian cancer society booksale raised more money than ever before to aid our library dear editor re booksale fundraiser may 8 9 10 11 1997 on behalf of the whitchurchstouffvihe public library i would like to sincerely thank the stouffville tribune for their assistance in publi cizing the 1997 booksale fundraiser the booksale grossed over 6000 800 more than last year this is an alltime record for the booksale fundraiser which has been held annually since 1990 an important element of fundraising is the community spirit that takes place in a town such as whitchurchstouffviue the stouffville tri bune has been a part of this community spirit our thanks again marilyn e ferguson ceo whitchurchstouffviue public library crossing the road at the same time i noticed far back an oncoming speeding red car with no doubt it would have eradicated both of these families in the middle of his lane fortunately i was able to slowly drive on the left lane blocking the geeses way and made them turn back to safety at least for now the oncoming driver did not care about my maneuver but was giving me that nobody stops me look he accelerated even faster after reading about miss ertls initiative i drove back and forth on this familiar stretch of mccowan at a speed of 65 kph in the 70kph zone since some pointconscious driver might go that speed in a hopefullysoon 50kph zone i immediately realized it would be impossible for me to stop for crossing geese and i prepared to ditch my car if necessary but there were no canada geese any more to be seen rather numer ous cars dashing into lemonville at a good speed of approximately 90 to 110 kph geesecrossing sighs in both directions analogous to the famil iar deercrossing signs in other areas would be appropriate in addition to other suggested mea sures as well as allway stop signs at the intersection of mccowan and bethesda sideroad going west this intersection is just between the geese crossing area south of bethesda sideroad and the chil drencrossing area north of bethesda in lemonville h von enckevort stouffville stouffville tribune a metroland community newspaper patricia pappas
