b 14 thetribune tuesday june31997 sit the tribune sports leisure got a score call our hotline at 6402100 keep your eye on the ball david freedman centre watches the flight of his ball go down the fairway as partners from left earl rothery jochen schleese and john banbury also take notice during action in the annual stouffville chamber of commerce golf tournament at the maples of ballantrae on thursday j photo by sjfoerd witteveen fastball peewees get off to an impressive opening the stouffville peewee boys fastball team has taken the com petition by storm in rep play so far this season the peewees won four of their first five games taking their opening three contests before being given a 200 setback by willowdale on may 22 the stouffville crew started off with a 145 triumph over woodbridge may 14 then blanked bramalea 120 the fol lowing day the peewees romped over markham 211 may 19 then got back on track after their long defeat by down ing newmarket 51 sunday in their win over newmarket pitcher rod assinck struck out six batters in a stellar outing john ferguson stood out offen sively with a home run and two rbis while contributing on defence as well the peewees who play their home games thursdays at 630 pm on the main diamond include several members of past ontario amateur softball asso ciation championship teams the mix of first- and second- year peewees includes robert anderson assinck ben bellis- simo dale boadway ben crawford gregg dalgarno nicky dambrosio ferguson lucas hunter jordan marshall scott mcdougall corey rice brandon tardella and shane timms coaching is handled by ted assinck clark hunter bill anderson reno dambrosio and mike boadway prevailed 1510 over white rodgers the gate winning its first two games no small fairgate homes started the k a u w decisive 143 win over coll spartans aim for york region ball titles both stouffville district secondary school ball teams were scheduled to take to the diamond on monday with each squad looking ahead towards the regional finals later this week the spartans boys fastball team was favored to cruise past holy trinity catholic high school in the york region athletic association semifinals at the town park while the girls slopitch team was even odds to handle newmarket in a game to decide first place the boys went undefeated during the regular sea son and is looking to make it three consecutive yraa titles the winner of mondays game will travel to newmarket for the yraa final thursday at noon should the girls win their game they will advance to wednesdays semifinals and championship game at memorial park starting at 1 30 pm the loser will compete in a fourteam wildcard mini tournament at milliken park today business as usual at howling centre sports notes bruce stapley local keglers can take heart thanks to the efforts of local bowling supporter john white theyll once more be able to head down to the stouffville bowling centre and indulge their fivepin busting passion as of monday the pintsized main st bowling establishment has been taken over by the area real estate agent the centre which has been closed in recent months had been leased and run for the past few years by the local fivepin bowling association but problems arose and when the lease ran out white decided to step in and keep the place from being converted to another doughnut shop or who knows what white who has bowled in the monday night mens league since 1992 plans to set up his real estate office in the back of the centre then set about the task of refurbishing the facility between showing prospec tive purchasers through houses for sale im going to go in and clean it up he told me recently ill give it a paint job and resurface the lanes its important to keep it open its been closed too often white will run a oneman opera tion at first with assistance from his two teenaged children and from his friends he plans to open the lanes in time for summer it will give the kids something to do well have birthday parties and run summer specials will restore leagues white said he will work towards restoring the leagues in time for the return of the fall bowling season the leagues have suffered i want to try to build them back up again white hopes to take on full time help in the fall he said john tait will continue to run the youth bowling council ybc program come fall and that hes committed to providing tait with as many bowlers as he can white feels the small bowling cen tre definitely has something to con tribute to the towns recreation ros ter i think this is going to be good for the town after all not everybody plays hockey class is now in session spirit of stouffville assistant coach brandon pridham far left offers some words of wisdom to players that took to the rec centre ice on saturday to take part in the spirit of stouffvilles tryout camp photo by cheryl johnson
